It was a pretty good weekend!
Friday I was at school all day. I had coordination with Guillermo and Lourdes and I helped Guillermo with stuff for his gym classes cuz he is really absent minded and somehow lost everything. I helped Lourdes with finding flashcards for her music class. I had class with the 5 year-olds and we were working on personal hygiene. I went over the actions of brushing hair, teeth, washing hands and showering, etc. since they are only 5, they don’t know much English. So after that I tried singing “this is the way we wash our hands….” OVER and OVER again. It was funny. The kids were so cute when I said “blow your nose” and “wash your body” they just giggled and giggled. After that I had 3rd grade science and I had made a worksheet to do with them. I did flash cards with animals and we worked on carnivore, omnivore and herbivore. And then we did living versus non-living animals. After that I went to 4th grade English and we worked on the alphabet… which didn’t make sense to me considering they had homework to write sentences describing a friend. doesn’t it make
sense to learn the alphabet before constructing sentences? But yea so I went through the alphabet with them and then we sang the alphabet song of course, and they didn’t know the “now I know my ABCs next time wont you sing with me” part and I wrote it on the board so they could learn it. They absolutely LOVED that part! They asked if we could sing it again like 4 times. So basically I spent all day at school singing.
After school we had lunch and took a little nap. Then we went to the gym because they were doing a promotion this weekend and it was free to try it out. We went to Pilates class and then used some machines and then we went to a GAP class which means gluteus, abdomens, and piernas (legs)- it’s a total body work out class. It was good and I liked the gym, it had a lot of machines and the facility was really nice. So we will probably join the gym.
After the gym we went to the library and bought plane tickets for next weekend- we are going to the island of Mallorca. We are flying into
Palma de Mallorca and we are going to spend the weekend there since we have next Monday off. It should be pretty there!
After the library we went home and ordered Chinese food and just ate that and watched a movie. It was a fun night at our apartment.
Saturday morning we were up at 8 and got ready and went to a plaza to meet the bus for the Membrillo festival. Membrillo is a type of fruit, it grows on a tree like apples but its extremely acidic and you usually have to cook it before you eat it. Its pretty sweet and common on like toast and stuff. For the festival, the city of Priego, Carcabuey and Zagrilla (which is really close to Priego) sponsored a hike through the countryside and through all the Membrillo trees and such. The bus took us into Carcabuey where we had a free “breakfast” which consisted of bread dipped in oil with membrillo on it and juice boxes. It was ok, but I really didn’t care too much for it. We hiked from the plaza into the membrillo fields and from Carcabuey to Zagrilla. Along the way they had a stop
and were giving out free shirts and water. Once we got to Zagrilla they had a big tent sent up with booths inside selling different things made with membrillo. Some booths were selling olive oil, the tourist info had a booth with lots of good information . They had a big bar set up selling refreshments and tapas. They also had music playing and activities for the younger people. We got a couple beers and just sat because we had 3 and a half hours before the bus was coming to pick us up. After a while they started serving a stew made with membrillo, chorizo, garbanzo beans and a type of spinach-like vegetable. We were a little hesitant to get some, but we bought some and it was actually pretty good. A marching band showed up and played for a while . And we met a very nice couple from Great Britain who have a house in Zagrilla and spend like half the year here. They talked to us for a bit and we exchanged information and they invited us to their house sometime. Rachel also saw a woman she had met at
a yoga class who was there with her family. She introduced us to them all and she talked to us for a bit, and we also exchanged information with her and she also extended an invitation to visit her home sometime. It was a beautiful day and we met some really nice people. We waited a bit longer for the bus, and by then we were exhausted! The bus took us back to Priego around 5:30pm and we all took naps of course. After showers and such we made dinner and just watched a movie. We were going to go out, but we were pretty tired from the day.
Sunday morning we slept in and then made French toast for breakfast. We spent the day making stuff for Halloween this week. We made the little ghost suckers-- tootsie pops with the tissue over them with faces. We have games and coloring activities and masks for the kids to make. It should be a fun week.
Sunday night for dinner we made spanish tortilla and it turned out really good! Then we just watched our spanish "amazing race" show and went to bed!
