On the reccomodation of our tour guide who farewelled us at our Madrid hotel we set off for Plaza Mayor once we'd settled in. A pleasant walk it took us about 20 minutes - buskers serenading us all along the way. Their talents ranged from mediocre to excellent - one string quartet in particular wouldn't have been out of place performing at the Sydney Opera House.
Plaza Mayor was a huge square with a statue at its centre and what looked like apartments surrounding it. True to form the sun shone out of a clear blue sky! A young man offered to take a photo of us both - he told us he was from Mexico, was working in Shanghai and in Madrid on holiday. Chatted to him for a while before wandering around to decide which restaurant to eat at, all of which seemed to have paella on the menu. Very pleasant, washed down with a glass of sangria!
Because of the rain delay the Wimbledon Mens Singles match was in its final stages by the time we were ready to walk back to the hotel. We joined a group of people who were watching the match on a TV in a store window. There was great excitement when Nadal won a point - much clapping - so the atmosphere and the crowd had built up by the time the game was finally over. Spain is definately on a roll!!
This morning we joined another tour group heading for Cordoba - a mixture of Australians, Americans, French, Italians, Lebenese & Spanish. Cordoba was very interesting. With a history going back to Roman times, the mosque began being built in the 8th Century and is now a Roman Catholic Cathedral. A fascinating history, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984.
From there we drove to Seville, passing thousands of olive trees and sunflowers. A very harsh dry land. Apparently Seville - which we'll explore tomorrow - is the hottest city in Spain.
