Having a great time in Copenhagen, the journey he was a little hellish - bus to London central, then out to Stanstead airport, spent the night at the airport (scaringly I was not the only one, with around 100 travelers passed out wherever they could find a spot in the terminal).
The trip was worth it, arriving late on Xmas eve, I quickly showered and, on the recommendation of the hostel staff, went across the road to a community hall for a Christmas dinner.
Had an awesome time, there was a table of fellow hostel kids so got to make some new friends, eat lots (including a special, yummy vego nut loaf for me) and drinks lots - what Christmas is all about!
So after a bottle and a bit of red wine (hey they kept offering it!) and these delicious liquor chocolates we all got up and joined the band for some dancing (cue photos).
It wouldn’t be Christmas without kids, there was a young boy and girl there so naturally I couldn’t resist playing the kid and starting mucking around with them. They couldn’t speak English and my Danish is non existent but we still
had fun.
An awesome way to spend Xmas eve and my first Christmas away from home.
The next couple of days were a tad quieter as the city died down for Christmas. Did some walking around the city (quite beautiful but not as fairytale pretty as Prague, and reminiscent of Amsterdam with bikes ruling to road and cyclists and their cycles dotted all over the city), went to the moves (saw the Golden Compass one day and I am Legend the next).
Also visited Christiana - a bit of a commune, reminded me of elements of Berlin, strange houses made of mostly recycled, bits and pieces. Very cool but the seedy, drug undercurrent was a little unnerving. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freetown_Christiania
Been spending some time with friends (a mix of guys n gals from NZ, Chicago China, Vietnam, Japan - typical hostel types!) including hitting a few cool bars and also meeting some locals who gave us some tips on things to do and see.
Boxing day I went to Malmo with a fellow hosteller. He was heading to Stockholm but couldn’t get a train so joined me in Malmo for the day. Malmo is a half hour
train ride away, just a smallish town in Sweden but has some interesting sights and some great cafes!
Went to Louisiania, an awesome art gallery about half an hour north of Copenhagen by train. The gallery buildings are very beautiful, there is park area surrounding the buildings, lots of interesting art work inside and outside and the gallery also faces the sea.
As well as local artists, the museum featured a work by Picasso, an interesting paiting exhibitions b Lucian Freud (grandson of Sigmund) and a fascinating photography exhibition of the works of Richard Avedon (all black n white portraits ranging from common folk, artists, actors and musicians, lots of fashion models and politicians).
I totally loved the gallery and Avedon’s photos were amazing (see link: http://www.richardavedon.info/photos/index.html).
For my last day and a bit in Copenhagen, plan to visit some more galleries, shop a little, go to some cool cafes, party some and relax - my idea of living. Then I’m off to London for New Years.
Have a good one. Would love to hear how everyone’s Christmas was.
