our pirate ship
Here is the tall ship that sails regularly as either a pirate ship, or just a tourist excursion. We boarded as pirates FAMILY REUNION IN LEWES DELAWARE. Not quite all of my family got together for not quite a week at the beach. I love family gatherings, formal and informal.
(Also, apparently with all your help, all my blogs are back online and all is well in the technical world for the time being. I will make my own back up again. Thanks to everyone who helped.)
I just got back last night from Philadelphia. I've been traveling with my sister around Phila. and then spent a week at Lewes, Delaware at a Teller family reunion. It was wonderful.
I've avoided organizing any of these wonderful events, but I've been informed by my siblings that I can't avoid it any longer. It's my turn! We rent four cottages a block from the bay and a short distance from the Atlantic Ocean. The babies and parents take up two cottages and we siblings, the oldest generation now, are based in the biggest house where we all gather every night for supper. We share the cooking and cleaning and expenses. Lewes is an old Dutch settlement and now that we have concluded that we are Dutch (along with a variety of other

OUR DAY AS PIRATES: The big trip, besides birding trips, was taking a “tall ship” ride for half a day. My sister, Gailey, arranged for the family to all take a ride on a pirate ship. A niece ordered a lot of pirate accessories for us to wear: bandanas, eye patches, mustaches, hooks, swords, guns, necklaces, etc. We arrived at the dock and learned the deep fog over the bay would keep us from leaving. “Come back in an hour,” said the captain, a beautiful young woman. So, we drank our coffee, chatted, played on the playground and came back in an hour.
As the ship was pulling away from the dock, a man beside me was acting strange. He couldn’t stand up; he refused to use the ice packs and drink the water his wife brought him. Suddenly, my nephew, the cardiologist was called to check out the man. He was on heart medicine and was either having heart problems, or was severely dehydrated.
Instead of leaving the dock, the captain moved the ship back to the dock

Our captain was a beautiful, young woman and also very skilled at sailing. and called an ambulance. The man and his family debarked; he refused the ambulance and walked off. The ship finally pulled off using the motors.
After we were out aways, we went to full sail and tacked across the bay and out into the ocean (I think). Twice dolphins swam along with us, leaping singly and in groups.
The crew has four full time, paid staff and many volunteers. They were dressed as pirates. Although it’s an old-fashioned ship, the safety precautions were modern. The captain gave us the safety talk, described the life jackets’ use, how to protect the children, etc. The organization is a non-profit and is one of the largest volunteer organizations in Delaware. The state funds much of the program, plus they get corporate and individual donations.
We had a lot of fun. I highly recommend a trip on a ‘tall ship.’

Our family ROCKS!
Wow, what a cool family! I really wish we could have stayed for the pirate expedition. It sounds like a lot of fun. We had fun while we were there, and look forward to the next time. Next time we WILL stay the whole week!
