Waitangi - Copthorne hotel
Mich, Beverly and julia outside the copthorne hotel at waitangi. The Bay Of Islands
Beverley, Julia, Jon and I went up to the Bay of islands last week, despite bad weather reports! There was some wind and rain but it was on and off and nothing like the weather forecast so that was good. We spent the first night in the Copthorne at Waitomo, it was lovely!!The next morning we had a look around the treaty house and grounds, where the treaty was signed in 1840 between the maori tribes and the Uk government. It was very interesting to see and amazing how everything changed after signing the treaty. We had a look at the Haruru Falls.
We got the car ferry over from Pahia and next stop was Russell where a lot of immigrants were just after the treaty was signed. It was very much a drunken sailor kind of place but now its a very nice little town. We looked around the museum and the first church in New Zealand- complete with bullet holes from the fighting !!
We travelled to Bland Bay where the bach is. Its fabulous sea on both sides and little islands to explore, is just perfect. We did a somesea kayaking
but I was so feeble I only lasted 5mins! Jon of course managed a good 40mins paddling! There were lots of quails in the garden and Jon managed to spot a dolphin in the bay too.
Woodhill Forest
We all went up to woodhill forest for the day on Sunday. Jon and Steve did some mountainbiking .Phoebe, Julia and I did the tree adventure which was a lot of fun. I think Julia had the most fun! The course was very high up in parts so its a good job Jon had his feet firmly on the ground on the bike, I think he would have managed the lower ones though. On the way back we went to Muriwai beach. It has black sand and the sea was so rough there was foam everywhere!
Snowplanet
On Jons 29th Birthday(Monday) we went to snow planet just north of Auckland which is an indoor ski slope. I was a bit nervous as it over a year since we skiied but it was ok. I managed to fall twice but whats new! Jon was really good and all the lessons came flooding back! In the evening
we went to a
Waitangi
This mast marks the spot where the waitangi treaty was signed between the europeans and the maori. restaurant called Flax for a meal in Browns Bay it was lovely.
Rangitoto
Yesterday we went to Rangitoto, the youngest volcanoe in Auckland. We got a ferry over from Devonport then spent a few hours there. We walked up to the summit where there were great views of Auckland. The crater was huge! The lava fields were weird as the ground just looked like soft dirt until you touched it and it was really hard.
