With a few days off work, we packed up the tent, filled the car with petrol and set off to spend a few days in Wales. Anglesey to be exact. The forcast was not good but being an island, Anglesey is supposed to be blessed with better weather (or so we are told!)
Wendy and Alan had rented a cottage there and as there was a campsite adjoining, it was a perfect set up.
We arrived on Anglesey in record time due to the lack of comuter traffic but after driving up and down several lanes for 20 minutes or so we eventually found the campsite, 10 minutes after Wendy and Alan had gone out for the day. Good start! The sun was shining but the wind was coming straight from the Arctic. How could it be this cold in May?
Things improved, however, when Wendy and Alan arrived home and after a quick meal and a walk round the nearby lake (getting bitten to death with midges), all six of us spent the evening sitting in the hot tub under the stars, sipping wine. (trying hard to pretend we were in the tropics!)
We did
Sunshine!
Bright sunshine as we walk through the forest to the beach make it onto the beach one day, finding a spot out of the wind, but much of our time this holiday was spent dodging the rain showers. On our last day together we walked up to Aber Falls on the mainland in glorious sunshine, but alas then the clouds came over and once again we ended up drenched to the skin as we dashed down the mountain in the rain.
The following day, Friday, dawned bright and clear and remained that way, unfortunately Wendy, Alan and the girls had already packed up and gone home. Typical!! We spent a day on the beach feeling very guilty because we were there and they had had to go home. I even ventured into the sea, three times!
The highlight of the week, however, was the balloon flight we had all planned for mum's 80th Birthday. Fortunatly the weather had decided to behave and the flight was able to go ahead. However the phone message giving instructions as to the location ect was not updated until 5.15pm meaning we all had to drive like idiots to the launch site. We made it by the skin of our teeth and ended up
And Showers
Just before the trek down to the South Stack Lighthouse pushing poor mum into the basket just minutes before the balloon took off. To be honest we thought it was going to take off whilst mum was half in and half out! As the balloon drifted off into the blue yonder we all jumped into our cars and proceeded to follow the retrieval truck around the lanes of Derbyshire. I believe from the air we looked like something out of Wacky Races as we all trailed along in convoy, stopping each time the truck stopped to check the location of the balloon. An hour later it landed in a farmers field, much to his disgust. We were not allowed to join the party, due to possibility of further crop damage, as they had their champagne reception. Instead we had to watch from afar with the farmer pacing up and down, cursing.
The balloon was eventually loaded onto the truck and hauled up the field, with mum sitting proudly next to the driver, clutching her certificate, as all the other passengers treked up the field on foot.
What next? we asked ourselves!
Well I don't know about Mum, but our next big adventure begins in just over six weeks
time when Stan gives up his job and we set off to explore South East Asia. Not in 5* luxury as most people our age would. No, we are going to join the backpacker trail hence you may have noticed we have changed our nick name to 'Still Crazy'. I think we must be!
