We Was Robbed!

Ok so lets get it over with - we got robbed! Day bloomin two in Costa Rica and we got our daybags stolen on the bus, including our passports, money, camera etc etc. It was a very slick operation but in the end I´m sorry to say we fell for the old dropping-the-money-stoopid-turistas-help-man-pick-up-his-dosh-whoosh-bags-gone-into-waiting-car routine. So needless to say the following days were spent sorting stuff out. In the end its all replacable but just extremely frustrating and annoying to say the least.

We spent a couple of days in La Fortuna which is a small town with a huge active volcano at the end of the main street. If you are lucky you can see it spouting lava at nightime and can trek closer to see it. We didn´t have much time or inclination for that as we were feeling pretty sorry for ourselves and a bit stupid, and besides, it was always covered in cloud .....apart from one morning we looked up and the clouds had cleared to show the whole thing for about 30 seconds - it looked like it had been painted on at the end of the street. We did give our selves one afternoon off to visit the Thermal Spa Pools. It felt so luxorious sitting in the warm pools with forest all around you. We practically had the whole place to ourselves too which was bliss!

We spent another couple of days in San Jose (the capital) to visit the embassy etc, then after contemplating spending a week travelling the buses inbetween La Fortuna and San Jose to set up and catch the crims we decided to head for the coast!

I can certainly see why they call this the "green season"! Costa Rica is SO GREEN ....its really quite stunning. We have spent the rest of the time travelling to various places along the pacific coast and visited a few national parks. The first one we went to was a trek through rain forest and walking up and along canopy bridges about 20 storeys up from the forest floor. It was like the rain forests you imagine with all kinds of strange plants, flowers and trees, mist coming through he trees, fantastic picture postcard waterfalls and huge crazy flying insects.....you felt like David Attenborough was going to pop up at any minute. We saw poison dart frogs, leaf cutter ants, various birds and lizards, huge electric blue butterflies, and a crazy "helicopter dragonfly" which had 2 sets of wings in the shape of an X. It really was amazing! We also visited drier forest where we saw huge iguanas, Jesus Lizard (walks on water of course), howler monkeys, huge bright red-orange forest crabs, and sloths. You see plenty of iguanas around all over but I think the biggest one we saw was in the tree at a backpackers. Just sitting at backpackers eating our breakfast we have watched hummingbirds, iguanas, toads, lizards etc etc. The sloths though, I think they win hands down, they are so cool.... you could easily sit and watch them all day. They may be slow but they are very entertaining!

We are now heading back to San Jose to pick up our brand new passports (complete with the new bio-metric detection thing! how flash!) and then make our way over to the Caribbean coast...... we may also have a new camera soon (Fleur, you are a star! X) so will be back all guns blazing before long!
