Richard:
So....just when we were getting on top of things another surprise....

Staying overnight in San Isidro, a nice little city in the mountains, we had been doing a trek in a reserve. It was great - much cooler and there was no one else there. It had been raining which it does most afternoons, and we started walking back the 3km to the bus stop on a steep, wet, rocky and muddy road.

Cath slipped on a wet rock and her right foot shot into her left one taking her off her feet and onto the deck. I turned round and she was tumbling down the path! I helped her to sit but her arm had hit a rock and as soon I touched it I knew it was broken - it made a horrible crunching feeling! Some locals got us 2 seats and gave us drinks which was so nice of them. Cath was in a lot of pain and feeling sick, and so we got a taxi to the main hospital. This was a bad move! No one spoke English and they were really rude (like being at tooting NHS, St Georges really). We did

One of the tortoises in the garden here... they are actually quite spritely!
our best to communicate in our limited Spanish but they didn´t even try and understand us. The going was tough (tooting NHS) and once Cath had a seat and I thought we would be seen I went to make some calls and found a private clinic in town. I got Cath and a taxi and we went straight there.... I tried to say good bye to the nurses at the hospital but it all fell on deaf ears.

At the clinic every thing was a million times better ..... until the news that Cath had broken her arm and needed surgery. Cath took it really well and considering that she had never been under with general anesthetic she took it in her stride. She went in for surgery at 10pm and all went well. She had smashed her Radius head (bone at elbow) and they had to remove it. She has good movement in her hand which we have been told is a really good sign. Its in a cast and we will know more when the cast comes off later this month. As I said, Cath has been pretty cool about it all and didn´t make 1 complaint

Richard saving bad T that made it into our room!
on the 4 hour bus journey back to San Jose (until some 30 something nerd started playing gangsta rap on his Motorola mobile) and so here we are learning Spanish in San Jose (much better climate to be in with a cast).

Looking back on the main hospital they were just trying to do their jobs and had a lot of people to see and they probably couldn´t understand what 2 Gringos were doing there when they should have been at the clinic around the corner.....

Cath:
WHOOPS!!!!!
Poor old Jeeves is getting quite good at putting my hair into ponytails for me! Keeping everything crossed for good news at the docs on the 21st!

As Rich said, we are back in San Jose AGAIN and have had to put the volunteer work on hold as the arm was still quite painful. So we signed up for a week of Spanish which has turned out to be really good. We are staying in a lovely hostel with tortoises in the garden (hence the pics). Rich is going to work on the turtle conservation programme next week while I enjoy a hammock or two on the coast..... then back to the docs and the big day to find out whether its proper bust or not!!! Uh Oh!!!

phew - writing and typing with the left hand is tough going!
