El Bocaito
Such great luck stumbling upon El Bocaito, just minutes from the house Yesterday (Monday) I accidentally found one of the best tapas bars in Madrid.
El Bocaito from all accounts creates some of the best tapa this city can provide and is frequented by some of the most famous locals and visitors to Spain.
The bar is only 5 minutes walk from home and is part of Chueca, in my humble opinion the best part of the city for restaurants and bars.
According to the New York Times, El Bocaito's famous mejimecha (marinated mussels with ham and onions in béchamel sauce) are sublime, as are the anchovies of the house and tasty croquettes.
Cited as a favorite place by the great Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar this place looks and feels like quintessential Spain and reminds me of many of the places I visited in Seville.
I spent only 15 minutes in the place and enjoyed a caña and some pimientos de padron, fast becoming my tapa of choice in Spain. Most bar's serve and these small green char-grilled capsicum and in most cases they are great however the pimientos in El Bocaito were heavenly.
I have only three days left in Spain (I return to
El Bocaito
Juicy jamon strung up above the bar certainly whets the appetite. London on Friday morning) and I have a lot still do see and do. My list at the moment includes attending la Corrida de torros (in English- bull fighting though there is hardly a fight!) visiting both the Reina Sofia and Prado museums and Estado Santiago Bernebeu, home of FC Real Madrid. If I manage to tick those off my 'to do' list I'll be happy. I will also be returning to El Bocaito and recommending it to anyone visiting Madrid.
