Well after about 2 months we finally got back to the beach for some much needed relaxation! We left Penang about 7am and finally got to Krabi at bout 6pm. It was a very long ride but we met some fun people to hang out with for the following days. We had been to Krabi before so we knew exactly where we wanted to stay when we got there. Unfortunatly it was full, along with the other 20 places that we tried to check in to. We finally found a place that turned out better than our original plan. Krabi is one of our favorite places down south becuase it is just a town that you can stay in and eat in for super cheap. Then you can do day trips to all the different surrounding areas. We can pay 5$ for hotels, 1$ for big beers and 2$ for meals rather than the super high prices of the beach resorts. Plus the people are much friendlier and there are actually thai people and not only tourists.
Our time in Krabi was mainly spent with Cat and Ross from Britian two of the people that we met on the bus
me!
being a little bit drunk and crazy! on the way from Malaysia. The first day we spent in the Krabi area we went to the Railay beaches and Phra Nang. Last time we were there it was really rainy stormy weather so we decided to go back. So glad we did! It is soo beautiful becuase of all the limestone mountains and has a bunch of different trails and beach areas that you can go and explore. After the beach we headed back to Krabi town to spend our night at the night market with a few beer. Our nights became very routine for the whole time we were in Krabi. Eat and then drink a couple beer and early to bed because there is not much nightlife.
The next day we decided to take a day trip to Phi Phi island. We really wanted to stay there a couple days but it was too expensive for our 25$ a day budget. The day trip was alright I guess. We were on a big boat though so unfortunatly we could not go in any of the small shallow bays. We should have went on the small speed boat and it would have made the trip so
much better. It was still some of the most beautiful scenary I have seen yet in Thailand. We went to one place called Maya bay and it was where the movie the beach was filmed. We did some snorkelling and were swimming with thousands of bright colorful fish. It was an amazing experience. I cant wait to go scuba diving now. After being on the boat tour we got dropped of on Phi Phi island for a few hours just to explore. It was one of the places that was hit fairly hard from the tsunami so they are still recovering alot from that. Still a beautiful place though.
The next day we spent on Ao nang beach. It is a fairly nice beach but nothing specail. Alot of the package tourists go to it and then are kinda dissapointed when they get there becuase it isn't half as nice as all the other beaches. When we go to Ao Nang there is a really nice resort on the beach so we just go swim in their nice pools and use their chairs. Usually nobody asks us if we are staying there becuase they probably think it is offensive
to ask...lol.
After Krabi we headed off to Phuket. We have heard so many mixed reviews about Phuket that we almost decided not to go. The first beach we stayed at was Patong. It is probably the most develpoed beach in thailand to the extreme. It is also probably the most expensive beach destination in thailand. The cheapest hotel we found was 20$ and it was not the greatest. Usually we spend 5$ on a beautiful room. The beach crowd isnt the best during the day. It is a bunch of fat, old europeans that just come off as really rude. As you walk around you dont hear anyone speaking english. The nightlife makes up for the bad beach scene though. It is full of the usual thailand girly bars and ladyboy bars along with lots of western bars, pubs and nightclubs. The sex scene in Patong beach is huge and creepy but once you get past that it is lots of fun. There are soo many old man thai girl couples it is disturbing. The few ngihts we were there we went to a few different ngiht clubs and met a couple of the locals. It was some
much needed party time!
After Patong beach we headed off to another beach in Phuket called Kata beach. We instantly found a nice hotel for only 10$. A really nice room and it has a swimming pool and a restaurant and bar. Kata is a much quieter beach than Patong ...thank god! There isnt too much nightlife besides eating dinner and going for a drink. Nice change from Patong. The beaches in Kata are also much nicer and not covered completly with umbrellas like Patong. In Patong we couldnt even find much area that was not covered in chairs.
When we were swimming in Kata beach the only people we met that were not European turned out to be from Vancouver. Also we found out that one of the guys used to live in our apartment on the same floor. What a small world. It was nice to meet some people that we could actually communicate with. The time we had left on Kata was basically spent sun tanning, swimming and relaxing. We found a really nice atmospheric place for our last night in Kata and had a delicious seafood dinner.
Today we are heading back up
to bangkok to apply for our visas to burma. We had bought our flights for burma about a month ago and have tried in 2 different cities to get our visas so far but have had no luck. Hopefully we can get them in Bangkok or we are out the 200$ for the flights and have to spend the rest of our time on the beaches. I guess that spending the next 2 weeks on the beaches wouldn't be that bad...but I would really love to see Burma and experience a new culture and get some hiking and activities done besides laying on the beach. Im getting too lazy!! Will update once more before burma...home in 17 days!!
