Us girls walking to the hot tub
Wont be invited to 2024 Dancing on Ice! So, even though the skies were clear, no Northern Lights again. I would really love to see them once more at least so more fingers crossed.
Last night us girls were putting our thinking caps on as, although we had previously crossed the Arctic Circle Northbound, we wanted to make crossing it Southbound to be an experience. So we hatched a plan to meet on the top deck but this time we would be in the hot tub drinking champagne. As we would be crossing early around 8ish it meant making sure we all had our alarm clocks on.
The girls meet up on the top deck with our dressing gowns, boots and wooly hats as does Eric who is now named Erica for this purpose as he decided to join us. Mike was the official photographer and compass reader and Andrew came to check we completed the task.
Now the fun part begins. We had to walk across sheet ice to get to the hot tubs which is no mean feat when you have no dressing gown belt and you are trying to keep warm holding a mug for your champagne.
Well we thought we looked like Torville and Dean but in truth we looked like bambi with legs going every way - never knew I could still do the splits! Don’t think we will be getting invites from Dancing on Ice this year.
So we get in the hot tub eventually keeping our wooly hats on and wait to pass the Arctic Circle with a mug full of champagne. Success!!
There is another ceremony for anyone who had not crossed before and this time instead of having ice cubes down their backs they are given a spoon of cod liver oil - not sure which is the best!! Eric decided he would join in and got given the commemorative spoon that he had the cod liver oil on - I just went to the desk and asked for a commemorative spoon; a lot easier than having a gob full of cod liver oil. I remember when I was a kid we used to have to stand in a row and be forced to take a large spoon full of it so I think I dodged a bullet!!
We reach Bronnysund in
The compass
When we crossed south bound the afternoon and the book said it was a pretty fishing village so the famous 5 thought they would explore and then over the tannoy came a message that the local church were putting on a concert for us and spiders will be singing - well you can imagine our faces and we all said to each other did he just say spiders would be putting on a concert on for us and we all agreed he did say spiders. Well this was a thing, we could not miss Norwegian spiders singing - not like our British spiders who just weave webs. So the famous five agreed without exception that we would definitely go to this concert - then another tannoy message came on and he explained he was sorry it would not be spiders singing for us it would be scouts. We all decided do you know what we will still go. So the famous 5 follow the leader to Bronnoy Church. The church is stone in a Neo Gothic style. Once inside we were introduced to the scouts who had many varied disabilities. We were treated to a great concert and they had all worked so hard to
The Scouts
Great concert be able to sing both in Norwegian and English. It does make you realise how lucky you are but everyone yes everyone including the choir enjoyed themselves.
We started strolling back to the ship and if honest the blurb about it being a pretty fishing village seemed a little bit over rated but we did find a nice wool shop. As Rachel is an avid knitter and I am a beginner we decided to go in. Well we both came out with balls of wool. It should be nice as Rachel purchased a Norwegian pattern for a scarf so she decides that we could have a race knitting the scarf, well that is not going to happen as she is an olympic knitter and I am a complete novice and I do not like losing!
