Hello everyone, thought i better get in touch and let you all know i'm still alive. We've been bush camping for the past week so this morning has been filled with the luxuries of hot showers and laundry!!
I'm still having an amazing time, despite the fact that everyone on our trip has had the dreaded D&V followed by colds for the past week, hopefully we're all recovered for now. Illness kind of put a hold on sightseeing for a few days so I missed a lot of Rabat and all of Casablanca, except for the delicious pattiserie opposite the campsite!
Since then we have driven across the Middle and High Atlas mountains, and it has been freeezing!! If there's one thing I wish I'd packed it's a hot water bottle, and a decent sleeping bag would probably help too! Luckily one guy took pity on me the other night and offered to swap sleeping bags for the night in return for me doing his washing up, an offer I couldn't refuse! Ahh well only a few more days and hopefully we'll be into more stereotypical African weather. It's been great fun sleeping under the stars and counting shooting
Oasis town
We've been eating lots of yummy dates so it's good to see where your food has come from! stars when you're too cold to sleep though.
Last Sunday we went riding into a Sahara sunset on camels and camped in Berbere tents. It was fantastic, all you could see were mountains of sand dunes for miles around. We sat round the camp fire and our Berbere guides played the drum and sang with us, it was just magical. Unfortunately camels are not the most comfortable mode of transport and we all had sore bums the next day! They are also not the most friendly, Daryl's camel ripped it's nose ring out and tried to make a bid for freedom on the way back, I was very glad not to be on that camel!!
After the Sahara we drove into the mountains and to two big gorges. At Todra Gorge a few of us went on a hike up the stony dried up riverbed to the head of the valley, where we were rewarded with fantastic views of the mountains. We managed to get lost and turned a 6 hour hike into an 8 hour expidition that only just got home as it got dark. Once again injury struck as I fell down one of the cascades
into a hole! I now have some big bruises on my back and everyone else has funny photos of me, such good friens I've made!! It does feel great to get out though after hours of sitting on a bus everyday.
We have now finally reached the civilisation of Marrakech and I'm really looking forward to seeing the night market. After that we head to the coast for a few days and then into Mauritania and our big desert crossing number one, so communications may be down for a while.
Hope everyone is happy and healthy back home and pleased to hear I'm probably as cold as you guys, at least it's hot and sunny during the day though, ha ha! Fxx
