First, a few facts of life in Quebec: 1) The croissants here are TOTALLY different than anything by the same name I. Have. Ever. Had. Just saying... 2) Folks from Quebec put maple syrup on anything and everything. 3) Québécois can build any building on any elevation, put stairs on it, and call it done! And it is!
We slept in this morning, so didn’t finish breakfast until after 10:30. Luckily all we had to do to start our day was walk across the plaza and board our Hop On, Hop Off ride for today. Now for the confession of the day—I MIGHT be earphone challenged...probably not, but possibly. Our plan was to ride our red open-topped bus around Quebec City the whole circle of town and then get off and wander the rest of the day. Well that plan was all well and good, but I couldn’t manage to actually HEAR anything for the first half of the trip. Don’t ask. Things were both said and insinuated. Eyeballs were rolled. After feathers that were ruffled were smoothed down, and the physics of operating very small volume buttons was mastered, we took ANOTHER circle so that I could actually hear
George V Place
Gothic-Revival-style Armoury what was said. It was amazing what you can learn when you understand what is said! Another handy fact of life! Another one (it seems I have many today) is the conundrum of why someone would spend a not insignificant amount of money to bring your large family onto a tour such as this, sit directly behind others when there are PLENTY of empty seats and proceed to talk (loudly) on their phones. If anyone has an explanation, please share!
We had an excellent day today, earphone issues not withstanding. It was a little cloudy and cool to start off and we maybe had a 15 second kinda, sorta shower, but the sun came out in the afternoon and we had good, albeit a little humid, weather. After our three hour bus ride, we spent the rest of our day wandering up and down (literally) around town and had a light lunch at Wong’s, a very good Chinese restaurant. It is the second oldest in Quebec City and being run by the third generation of family. Good service, good food.
While I am still in the mood for confessing...and you should know that I was not the only
guilty party in this decent into sin...after walking down into the lower part of the city and then back up Rue St. John’s, we spied (dare I say it?) the only McDonald’s in Old Quebec City. I will confess that we did stop and we did have a frappe...but we did split it which should count when we are given penance!
As a note to those of you that are planning a trip here in the immediate future, we do have one suggestion. Depending on how long you plan to stay and if you only have one day to do bus tours of Quebec City and/or the surrounding area, we highly recommend the city Hop On, Hop Off. Our trip yesterday was very good but we got much more out of the city only tour.

I am really enjoying your blog. Quebec City is beautiful and there is a lot to do and a lot of steps to walk. Some of your pictures remind me of the Canada pavilion at Epcot. And there were a lot of stairs at that pavilion, so it all makes sense now. Happy Friday!
