Copenhagen
One of the corners of the Citidel Our first full day in Copenhagen began with commencing our 72 hour “Red Bus“ ticket on the hop on - hop off bus which will be our mode of transport around Copenhagen over the next 3 days. To get the lay of the land, we undertook a complete circuit of the red line and its 23 stops to we could understand the best places to spend our time around. Copenhagen has many attractions but the number one place to visit on everyone’s top 10 list is Tivoli Gardens which is a 150 year old amusement park built in the centre of Copenhagen. Walt Disney visited Tivoli Gardens in 1951 and it is said that he modelled the Disneyland theme parks around Tivoli Gardens. While we didn’t indulge in the amusement rides, we had a great time walking around Tivoli with its multitude of restaurants, gardens and fountains and we even indulged in one of Copenhagen’s famous open sandwiches - Tish the salmon salad and Andrew the roast beef.
Before long, it was time to jump back on the bus as we headed to stop 6 (Christiania) where we were treated to a pub band performing on a pontoon in the

Just like Stan and Jack we are on the Hop On Hop Off bus canal. We then walked along the canal and crossed the main bicycle/pedestrian bridge into Nyhav which is an amazing canal built by Swedish prisoners of war in the 1800’s and with adjacent buildings built in the same style of Amsterdam. For all intent and purposes, if felt like we were in Amsterdam only a lot cleaner and the road on one side of the canal has been closed and made into a sprawling alfresco dining area. Nyhav was a magnet for tourists with thousands cramming the alfesco area. It was from the canal that we caught our boat cruise (part of our hop on - hop off bus ticket) and enjoyed a 75 minute tour of the canals visiting all the important landmarks including the Little Mermaid statue, Royal Palaces, Art Gallery, Stock Exchange Building, Parliament Building, Danish Architecture Museum etc.
After the boat cruise, we walked back to Tivoli Gardens and enjoyed some entertainment (ballet) and a short light show while enjoying bowls of thick tomato soup for dinner tucker. The lights around Tivoli Gardens when it finally gets dark (10:00 pm) are amazing as was the ambience of our evening stay. Before long, it was 10:30 pm

Spire on the old Stock Exchange building so we headed to the Copenhagen train station just over the road from Tivoli and caught the train back to our hotel.
