What a beautiful city! We are spending our time in Chania in Old Town. Our hotel is right along the Mediterranean with a nice view of it from our terrace. We are staying in a studio apartment in a beautiful old building in Old Town. There are only nine units in the building with marble stairways. We are on the third floor which is the top floor and I know about the marble stairways because it's a climb of 56 steps to get up here! The streets here are less congested with no motor scooters or ATV's to dodge as you walk around. The boardwalk area is pedestrian only so it's stress free strolling. It was explained to us that there is an aircraft carrier docked here today so there are many military personnel along the boardwalk. At dinner tonight we sat next to a group of shore patrol out for a good meal. I always saw shore patrol in movies but never realized they really do exist!

The walkway along the water is lined with restaurants and bars of all kinds. Beyond them going away from the water are walkway after walkway lined with shops selling clothes, jewelry, shoes and sandals, souvenirs, ice cream, coffee, and much more.

Our morning was spent taking in the initial views of the waterfront and visiting a farmer's market. Most of the shoppers at the market were local people with their wire shopping carts loaded with fresh goods. There were fruits, vegetables, fish, cheese, olives, flowers, honey, and all sorts of clothing items from socks and underwear to dresses and shirts and pants.

We visited the lighthouse here which is the landmark of Chania. It was built in 1595 by the Venetians and was originally lit with a torch. The light now is visible from 7 miles away. Another stop was at The Cathedral of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. The interior was very ornate with huge chandeliers. Sorry no photos were allowed. Moving on we went to an inside market which had items similar to the market we had visited earlier today but still well worth the visit to see how citizens of other countries live.

Our dinner tonight was chicken soup, grilled pork on a stick with fries, coleslaw, and bread with avocado, tomato, and tsidziki spreads. We enjoyed it all.
