Another beautiful morning in Chania allowed us to thoroughly enjoy an outdoor breakfast. Upon the recommendation of our hotel owner we went to a bakery a few doors away where we chose fried eggs and bacon,an omelet with ham, tomato, onion, green pepper and mushrooms, both served with toast, tea and coffee. It was tasty and enjoyable as we watched people stroll by and other sitting above us enjoying the sun on their balconies.
The remainder of the morning and well into the afternoon we walked the streets in and around the Port. As you continue to walk you always come upon walkways you have not been down before offering new things to look at. We did visit the indoor market again since markets are always interesting. We also stopped in the Catholic Church of the Assumption. It's such a totally different atmosphere when you step into a church. The walkways outside are filled with people, noise and activity but when you enter the church it is completely silent.
The temperature reached 81 degrees(26C) this afternoon requiring a break for a refreshing gelato. It truly hit the spot. We continued to stroll around the port stopping to rest on
a bench along the water. This is such a beautiful place!
Sometime in late afternoon we returned to our hotel for a break, some air conditioning, and to freshen up before heading out for dinner. Our food selections tonight were cod with rice, and beans, mousaka and a Greek salad, also some bread with a delicious black olive spread. We also were served a complimentary dessert and some raki. We enjoyed it all.
In our observations while walking around we noticed that the cars here are covered in dust. Yesterday we met some regular visitors here at the hotel who are from Hawaii. Tonight we talked to them and the hotel owner again and asked about the dust. They said it is it the air and is blown here from sand storms in Egypt and Libya.
Tonight we sat to watch the sun set behind an island and had a lengthy conversation with two lifers from the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman. There are 5,000 men on the ship. This is their first time in Greece. They are returning from a mission in Iraq. One of the guys has 3 years left, the other 8 and they are
already planning what they are going to do for the rest of their lives. I wrote yesterday about the shore patrol. These two guys will have shore patrol duty in two days. It will be their last day in port and they will be rounding up any stragglers they see. The shore patrol we saw yesterday were wearing lanyards that said "Give me hell". Now that we know the ship name we know the reason why since it is a famous quote from Harry S. Truman.
Conversations are easy to have with other tourists. At breakfast this morning we talked with two girls from the U.S. who are now living in Europe. One is working in London now and the other has just finished studying in France. They are getting some traveling in before the one returns to the U.S. When you sit near people in restaurants their hear you speak and ask where you are from. We've been told we have an accent.
It's been a great last day in Chania!
