Well you can't say that the first two days here in Taipei have not been interesting.
Our flights from Manchester to Taipei via Amsterdam went to schedule apart from a small technical hitch !! But that was sorted within about 10mins...We only had an hour between flights but we were on the same carrier KLM and didn't have to go to a different terminal and so made it to the gate just as they were embarking. So far so good.
The inflight food was good and they came around quite a few times with drinks which might have helped with having a few hours sleep....
So we have arrived in Taipei hurrah ! Has our luggage?....well ,not all of it!!...it had to happen to us at some time. We've been very lucky that in all our travels it's never happened before. We had a big bag with most of our clothes and a small one with one change of clothes each and mostly products and chargers. The small bag made it !(I obviously had a premonition and was prepared) A bit of form filling, with quite a few other people, and slightly lighter than we planned had an easy journey on
Stuffing dumplings
Delicious pepper beef buns, cooked in a tandoori oven, huge queues for these so every one knew they were good.
the metro and walk to the hotel. When we checked in they had upgraded our room! I had booked an non window room (cheaper...married to David for too long!!) My though being ,that the view is usually some air conditioning pipes and and blank wall so what's the point.
So now we have a window ! With a view of a blank wall and great, light shines in somehow all night!!
Had a look at the insurance cover in the evening! The only thing that I thought I'd need was my umbrella as it was promising rain the next day, but there's one thing they are not short of here its umbrellas. Anyway the bag turned up the next afternoon so we didn't even have 24hrs.without it.
So first day. Bit cold but stayed dry, so had a mooch around and went to Chiang Kai Shek memorial hall and watched the changing of the guards, they had very shiny helmets and rifles and it seems to involve lots of heel clicking and arm waving...
In the evening we managed to drag ours selves out to a street market and sampled some amazing food, lots of things we had no idea
National theatre and Nat.Concert hall
Seen from Chiang Kai Shek memorial hall
what they were but all very tasty and mostly deep fried!
Ready for a good night's sleep...
About 12 midnight we were woken up to the room shaking and our phones going off, I actually think it was the phones that woke us and that we might have slept through the shaking. The phones were an automatic alert that they send out (from the President!) If it is classed as over a certain magnitude.
Anyway we went back to sleep, surprisingly only to find out a bit more when we woke up!
And answer lots of messages from people worried about us!
We are about 75miles from the centre of the quake and were planning on going there in a couple of weeks, think we might have to re think that one.
