We are planning a trip to South America in March next year, and would like to include at least, a visit to Machu Picchu, and Iguazu Falls in the 2 weeks we have available. having never travelled to South America before we would greatly appreciate any advise that others can offer on best means of travel etc so that we can more effectively plan our trip

We are planning a trip to South America in March next year. We have booked a cruise on the Costa cruise line ship Costa Mediterranean, and would like to see as much of South America as we can, prior to the ships departure.

Our itinerary is fairly "liquid" at this stage, but based around the following premises.
We are a couple who fall into the "grey nomad" class of travellers (late 50's), and although relatively spry for our ages, undeniably subject to the toll of the years, so not anticipating undertaking any unusually strenuous hiking challenges etc.
Neither of us speak Spanish, - pero intentamos aprender al menos el español "de supervivencia"
We depart Australia, and arrive in Santiago on March 1 2009.
We depart South America March 17 2009, from Santos Brazil.

We would like to include a visit to Machu Picchu in Peru, and to Iguazu Falls. We have also been told that the Atacama desert is spectacular and should not be missed.

We are kicking around the idea of an overnight bus from Santiago to Arica, and then catching a flight to Cusco, from the nearest possible location ( Tacno?) then returning to Las Paz for a flight to Iguazi falls and then on to Santos.

Questions we have are
1. Does one see much of the Atacama desert on the overnight bus from Santiago to Arica?
2. Are we being unrealistic in terms of time scale to achieve what we would like to do?
3. How savage are the effects of Altitude sickness?, and are there any remedies/preventatives that anyone can recommend?
4. Are there any other "must see" recommendations out there?
5. Is anyone else out there contemplating anything similar?

Many Thanks

Hello Jeff and Rosie 😊

I cant comment much on your itinery because I have only been to Peru and Rio de Janero in Brazil.
I do recommend you get copies of the Lonely Planet guide books for the countries you are going to if you dont have them already. They cover safey, suggested itineries, transport.........

As regards altitude sickness I sit still as much as I can at high altitudes. That minimises it. I would advise anybody not to hike at high altitudes but having said that some do it. When I was on high altidudes I used to get short of breath just walking up a fairly small hill. I used to also feel tired. More severe than the altitude sickness, what used to effect me when going from high to low to high.... were the sudden changes in temperature. My body did not adjust quickly enough to that so I got dehydrated. That made me pretty sick.

With two weeks your itinerary is unrealistic. The bus from Santiago to Arica is not really in the 'overnight' class as it takes about 29 hours. It is possible to do the Atacama and Perú but the Iguazu falls is well out of the way for a two week trip. Reply to this

1. We took a 24 hour bus from Santiago to San PEdro de Atacama, and the scenery was impressive during the day, but nothing compared to what we saw once we were in San Pedro de Atacama. If you really want to see the desert scenery, I'd recommend a few days in San Pedro.

2. Yes, I think two weeks is too little for 3 countries and you're travelling great distances. You need a day to recover from those 24 hour bus journeys, plus time to acclimatize in Cusco or La Paz.

3. It affects different people in different ways. I think going straight from sea level to Cusco or La Paz is asking for trouble. It's better to acclimatize at 2500 m before these higher altitudes if possible. Reply to this

Hey Jeff & Rosie,

Great to see you have a couple of weeks for South America. There are some great highlights here! If your really want to see Iguazu & Macchu Picchu I think you can do it with some good planning. Though you would need to take some flights.

Our advice would be fly straight from Santiago to Peru, Lima and connect to Cuzco. I would suggest you spend a couple of days in Cuzco to get used to the altitude or consider taking the train to Macchu Picchu rather than the 4 day hike. If you opt for hiking the Inca Trail book ahead to ensure you get the passes and dates you want.

From Cuzco fly to Buenos Aires, then get a 20 hour bus to Puerto Iguazu. Or you could get an internal flight to Iguazu, though I am not sure of costs.

We are spending the next 2 weeks between Iguazu & Macchu Picchu so if you want to see how it works for us feel free to check our blog!

Safe and happy travels,
Mike and Sarah
