how easy/difficult is it to get Chloroquine in South America?

Hi there

We're heading out on to South America and will be taking lots of Doxycycline with us but we've been advised to take Chloroquine for Central America.

Rather than carry the pills with us for a few months, we thought it'd be easier (and probably much cheaper as well?!?) to just buy them before we leave South America, but not sure they'll be available over the counter as easily as in the UK.

Any advice?!?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi!

My boyfriend and I are in Peru at the moment and needed last minute malaria pills before we headed into the jungle.....its really easy to find Chloroquine at most of the Boticas pharmacy) that you see on the street. I think the bigger and more commercial looking Boticas are sure to have it....we got 50 pastillas for the both of us for about 40 Soles I think....maybe less...very inexpensive and very accesible.

I am traveling through Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru. Should I only be taking Malaria pills in anticipation of a jungle trip? Or rather should I take them throughout my stay in S. America? Thanks. Reply to this

I can only put forward information on my experience... read my blog about my trip to manaus it has a bit of a story about Doxycycline and how it made me sick. In manaus i couldn't buy preventative medicine. There was only medication for when you got malaria haha! i don't know what it is like everywhere else...

in the end i stopped taking Doxycycline but luckly Manaus is based on the rio negro 'black river' (which the mosquitos don't like) I did a three day jungle trip and stayed in manus a week and didn't get bit by a mosquito once. didn't even use repellant.

other locations and different seasons can make a difference tho... so if you go somewhere else definately take them. Reply to this
