Hi guys, I really need someone's help because I don't know much about S.America and i'm finding it hard to decide where we should go after Peru.

I can't decide between Chile, Argentina or Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.
I don't even know if it's possible to get to any of these places quickly and cheaply (plane, bus, train?!)

Any advice on how the best way to travel out of Lima, and any recommended places we should visit would be an amazing help.

Thank you all very much x Reply to this

I'm biased but I'd say Ecuador! The Galapagos are amazing if you can afford to do it and you could always fly straight from Lima to Quito and then onto Galapagos. If not, Quito and Cuenca are full of stuff to do, beaches in Ecuador are beautiful, the Quilotoa loop is amazing to do or a jungle trip if you haven't already done it. If you have only got a week you'll probably have to fly as it took me more than 24 hours straight travelling to get from Lima to Cuenca, Ecuador by bus. Alternatively you could always stay in Peru and do the north in a week. Trujillo (Chan Chan is amazing), Sipan, Cajamarca, Huanchaco, Mancora etc. Or if your trip doesn't already cover it go south to Nazca, Ica and Huacachina.

Thanks a lot Kat,
I'll have to check the tour but i think it's pretty thorough, covering a lot in Peru...
would it be expensive to fly to Quito?? Even if it was i suppose over 24 hrs each way would still leave 4 days to spend in the Galapagos. Reply to this

I think you can get flights for around $300 to Quito. If you go by bus and want to go to the Galapagos it would be better to travel to Guayaquil and fly to Galapagos from there to save getting buses all the way up to Quito. All Galapagos flights leave from Quito and stopover in Guayaquil to pick up more people. I would say Galapagos would wrap up what sounds like an amazing trip pretty well! Galapagos!!!!! Hello Leslievainikolo 😊

I traveled from Lima to Equador partly overland and partly by flying. I was going to go overland all the way but after the 3rd day of travelling through the desert by bus I felt I would not miss anything if I flew to near the Equadorian border. As I remember the flight was not expensive.
I certainly recommend Equador. Beautiful scenery and good humoured people.

I did not book anything in advance. In fact me being in Peru in the first place was an accident. I was about to catch my connection flight to Ecuador from Amsterdam when I was told it was cancelled because of a volcano erupting near Quito. The airline people were going to fly me back to Ireland. I asked them to fly me to anywhere else instead. They gave me a choice of places and I chose Peru because I could make my way overland to Quito and hopefully the volcano disaster would be OK by the time I was flying back to Europe. I had nothing in Peru booked and it was no problem. I cant remember now how I got the plane tickets. I think I actually just showed up at the airport and just bought one for the next flight going. Same with buses. I just showed up at the bus stations and same with hotels.

Just a thought about flights - I did a Cusco to Lima flight for which I paid $100 (actually quite overpriced but it was summer). I bought it in advance over the internet and by the time we actually flew that flight was up to almost $200 so it might be worth buying it in advance. We flew with LAN airways who were very good - I think they're a Chilean airline if you want to have a look. Reply to this
