Getting to La Paz, Bolivia from Lima, Peru??? Adventure extraordinaire?

My family and I are going to Bolivia and we've purchased a flight to Lima rather than the whole way to La Paz (which is my destination), as I got a really great deal, and all the tickets to La Paz never seem to go on sale.

How can I get from Lima to La Paz??? I'd rather not pay the $200+ American to fly to La Paz, but we're going with lots of luggage and stuff, so I don't know if travelling by bus is a good idea (it's a looong bus ride too)... but maybe it's worth it?

Preferrably I would like to take a train, but I don't if there is a line that goes to La Paz (even with connection).

If anyone has anecdotes, or advice, or knows how to get a good rate to fly over to La Paz, please reply.

I'd appreciate all the help I can get! = )

Hi Danny,

Forget about the train, they are very very very slow. The bus is your best bet if you can't find a cheap flight. The busses are very cheap, comfortable and lots quicker than the train. The bus from Lima to LaPaz will take a very long time though. Floris bus company have nice busses (think i spelt the company name wrong, but it is close).

You may want to fly to Cuzco and stop there for a few days and see machu picchu, the flight is about 1 hour and is about 100 USD, or take the bus. This will also help to acclimatise to the altitude for LaPaz...

Then you can get a bus to Puno and onto LaPaz. If I remember the bus to Puno is about 6 or 8 hours and then about 2 hours to LaPaz.

Enjoy the trip and the coca tea.

Cheers, Mike

Arequipa (spelling?) is also a blast, and may be worth a stop briefly. Ormeno (spelling again?) also do good busses, but beware of a bus route through Copacabana. That involves numerous delays, a change to a smaller bus and a ferry over Lake Titticaca. Pretty but infuriating. Cusco has more to offer than just Macchupiccu. There are LOADS of good ruins and treks to do from there, and some fantastic restaurants. Try Witches Garden. In La Paz Ram Jam is a great, cheap place to eat and make sure you get to Tiwanaku, just be prepared to use your imagination as its not very developed for tourists. But definately dont fly, you'd miss out on alot! Reply to this
