My South America Journey

Need some help planning the 2 months I have got to spend in South America

Hi guys

The last 2 months of my RTW trip in 2008 is made up of travelling around South America.

Basically I arrive in Santiago, Chile and leave from Rio, Brazil. I want to do all the best things possible in 2months!

It is a bit awkward arriving in Santiago, because I want to travel north to Boliva and Peru, but also see Southern Chile and Argentina, so it may mean I have to travel back on myself (I was thinking of going North first, and then back South).

Any tips etc on what to see, the best (cheapest) ways to travel would be much appreciated. It is worth noting I will be on a tight budget.

In 1998 I made Santiago - Rio journey.
My itinerary was: Santiago - Antofagasta - Arica - Nazca - Lima, then a little trip to Tingo Maria and back to Lima, flight to Cuzco, train to Puno, crossing to Bolivia, La Paz (visit to Tiwanacu), Oruro - Cocjabamba - Santa Cruz, train south into Argentina, bus to Asuncion (Paraguay), visit to Iguazu falls, then Foz - Cascavel - Rio. It took me 53 days and 16.000 km. And at that time it was 2.000 USD.
I have no idea how you would be able to squeeze in a trip to Punta Arenas (southern Chile)... On tight budget?
Of course, you can do a lot of changes, but best thing for you would be to arrive in Lima, not Santiago, travel through Peru and Bolivia, cross int Chile then back into Argentina and then go up north. I also have to add that I like Paraguay, and the approach into Brazil from Asuncion - Ciudad del Este is nice. Parana is nice.
Have fun,

Ideally I always wanted to arrive in Lima, as it would then just be a case of travelling south. However, non of the oneworld alliance airlines fly from New Zealand to Lima unfortunately. Reply to this

Yes, BA doesn't have Lima, but I'm surprised that AA is not present there.
Maybe you can take some undirect flight? Or add one from Santiago to Lima with local companies?
From Europe we usually use KLM, Lufthansa is also out I think.
Anyway, make your plans and enjoy every minute of it...

It needs to be a OneWorld alliance partner because that is my RTW ticket unfortunately.

Any thoughts etc still needed! Reply to this
