Advice on travel plans in South Island
16 years ago, November 5th 2007 No: 1 Msg: #22037
We are arriving in Picton on 27th and then on to cousins until morning of 29th. Then have 2.5 weeks to "do" the south Island. Adivce on best route to tak. we will have a car.

Rough idea-
29th-30th Wesport to Abel Tasmin. sea kayaking, camp over night and walking
31th .hokitika for new Year- not so sure about this!

2nd Greymouth - Franz Josef glacier walk
3rd Franz Josef glacier - wanaka
4th Wanaka- Queenstown
4th -8th Base ourselves in Queenstown and do some white water rafting, visit Milford sound and arrow town
8th=15 th Not sure where to go after this
15th Christchurch fly home

1. Where should we spend New year we will be in Wesport on the morning of the 29th
2. Is 4 days adequate in Queenstown
3. Could yo uuse queestown as a base and travel south for day trips
4. How many days to travel from Wesport to Queenstown ( want to to glacier walk)

All advice greatly recieved

Hi,
i'd advise you to spend more time in Fiordland - it's arguably the most beautiful part of NZ and Te Anau is a great town to use as a base. (use a few days of the 8th-15th to do one of the walks - probably not the Milford track as it'll be sold out. maybe the routeburn or keppler?) and then visit the Catskins down near Invercargill before heading back up to Christchurch via Dunedin - very pretty. Enjoy. Reply to this
