How safe from crime did people feel travelling through Central America?

Border towns are always the most dangerous. Cross the borders during the day and stay with a group.

hola
Everybody is always talking about the over exesive carring of shotguns but if you pay attencion the only people that have them are guarding something. there might be the guy riding on top of all the pop in the pepsi truck with a gun but if he didnt there wouldent be any pop left at the end of the day. just remeber that its almost never because the people are scarred for there safty but they dont want any of there stuff stolen. it is a little creepie seeing all the people with shotguns but you get used to it with in a few weeks. I mean there is a guy that came with the house that we rented and he walks around outside with a shotgun but he knows exactly what hes doing, just like every one else with a gun.

Well, as the person who started this thread I should probbo add my comments now that I been here 2 months...

I have had no problems at all personal safety wise, though someone did get into a dorm room and go through bags (including mine, but all my valuables were in a locker) at Tinas Hostel in Caye Caulker in Belize, but then the hostel has a shit security system really so it wouldn´t be hard for someone from outside to get into the rooms. Basically each dorm room only had one key, which hung on a hook in the foyer with the room number written on the key, so not so difficult for a savvy theif to get into the rooms really....

But in terms of any incidents against my person, nothing to report and I have never felt unsafe either. But then I´ve avoided trouble spots like Guatemala CIty and Belize City also. I spent 2 nights in LIvingston, Guatemala, over the wknd which someone mentioned as being a bit suspect, but I found most people dead friendly and I was walking around late at night a bit pissed!

I´m here for another 4 months and looking forward to it! I been keeping my blog reasonably up to date too ;-)
