Having just finished our trip we sent some Oz tips to a friend planning a similar trip and thought they might be useful for anyone going to Oz...

Get a YHA card as you get loads of discounts on stuff (they are about 37$ in Oz but you can get them in UK, not sure how much) you will save on accomodation as well as buses etc.....check out YHA.com (or google it if that's not right).

Try and go to Ayers Rock - we did a trip called the Rock Tour which went from Alice Springs (was $295 for three days/2 nights and included sleeping under the stars in a swag).

Melbourne is really good, less touristy than Sydney but loads of decent bars/restuarants etc.

Eat in food courts, they are really cheap and usually really good food.

Libraries often have free internet just call and book or walk in

Get a phone card, global gossip do one called Talking Cow which means youcan call home mega cheap.

Unlock your phone before you go and get a Aussie sim for cheap so you can call hostels in Oz.

Brisbane, Noosa, Hervey Bay and Townsville are all pretty nice places.

Go to Mon Repos (nr Bundaberg) where you can see the turtles hatching at certain times of the year or the eggs being laid by giant turtles.

Look into a medicare card from the UK, gives reciprocal benefits if you need prescriptions etc (just google medicare and should get the info) but you need to get it whilst in the UK. Reply to this
