We are going to Fiji in 2 weeks and we were wondering if anyone can recommend a island to visit. Or of any accomadation? We fly into Nadi first. Someone has told me of the Fiji experience is this worth while?
Reply to this I was in Fiji for twelve days last year. I stayed on three different islands: the main Island (Viti Levu), Ovalau, and MantaRay Island (part of the Yasawas).
If you're looking for two weeks of beaches and resorts, then the Mamanuca's and the Yasawas are the way to go. You can arrange to do some island hopping through the company that runs the Yasawa Flyer (the main transport out to both island chains). The Yasawas are mainly backpacker resorts. I only stayed on MantaRay Island, which was amazing, and from what I heard, one of the best of the Yasawas.
If you want to see some of the colonial history of Fiji, and go off the beaten track, then Ovalau, and the town of Levuka, is the place for that. There's a few smaller islands around there too.
I've posted the link to
the first of my Fiji blogs if you want to check out a bit more of what I saw.
Reply to this I was in Fiji in June/July this year. I stayed at about 6 different islands within the Mamanuca group and Yasawas. They were all fantastic!
It really depends on what you are looking for. If you are after isolation and beautiful beaches then go to the Yasawa's. Although it's supposedly backpacker accommodation, it's really quiet good. You can get beachfront bure's pretty much everywhere.
If you are looking for resorts then the Mamanuca's is the way to go. Beachcomber is very touristy and lots to do. The resort takes up the whole island, has a great band and sand bar and is known for its nightlife (in comparison to the rest of the islands anyway!). Plantation is similar but a lot bigger and more families.
For a happy medium I suggest Manta Ray Island in the Yasawas. Lots of activities, beautiful beach, touristy but not too big, great view from the bar-and a really nice bar. Another one I place in the middle is Bounty Island.
Really I don't think you can go wrong though as they are all fairly similar in terms of accommodation, friendly fijians and beautiful beaches but it does depend what you are looking for.
How long are you there for?
Also, look around Nadi but I don't really recommend staying there. Unless you want to stay in a high end resort without much of beach and less contact with fijians living on the islands. (To me its all about the beaches and seeing a different culture so I don't see the point!)
Have a great time, I hope I have been of some help!
Reply to this I just realised the date on your post...silly me!
Oh well, hopefully this might be useful to someone else!
I hope you had a fantastic trip Niamh and Steve!
