Looking for guidance for my travels around South America
16 years ago, July 9th 2007 No: 1 Msg: #16293
Hey Guys,

So here's the deal. My girlfriend and I are travelling around the world, South Africa, OZ, NZ, Thailand and finish off in South America. We're due to fly into Chile (Santiago) around April 9th and are leaving Brazil (Rio) around May 30th - these date are pretty flexible however. We'll have around £1500 left over (subject to change!!!!) and we're just looking for some general ideas or tips. We're both pretty keen to travel north and see Boliva then across to Rio. Couple of more specific questions:

- How safe is it travelling through Chile/Peru into Bolivia as a couple?

- Any specific overland trips/companies to recommend (or avoid!)?

- What is public transport like in South America?

- Are internal flights generally accessible and cheap?

This is our first time touring around the world, but we're both relatively experienced travellers, any advice AT ALL would be fantastic,

Thanks in advance,

Luke

ok...

This countries are as safety as any place... if you don't do nothing stupid like being late on a dangerous street.

Public transportation ... from 1 to 10.

Chile: 9 (www.turbus.cl, wwwpullmanbus.cl)
Perú: 5
Bolivia: 3

Internal flight are very expensive.... but... sometimes, you can find cheap offers.. visit www.lan.com

For your budget... Bolivia is the cheapest at SouthAmerica, Chile the most expensive, but everything depends on the city.

Coup of natural orange juice on street:
Bolivia US$0,3
Perú US$1
Chile US$2

Cheap hostal:
Bolivia: US$3
Perú: US$6
Chile: US$15

I hope to have been useful.
bye

Hi Luke,

Some Peru tips:
I don´t necessarily think internal flights within Peru are that expensive, they range between 60-110 dollars one-way depending on the season.
One of the best bus companies is Cruz del Sur, and it is important to choose the right company when bussing it in Peru because some are quite dodgy.
If you want to go from Peru into Bolivia, then your route will go via Puno. I assume you will visit Cusco (you should, and not only because Machu Picchu came out as one of the 7 world wonders, it´s just amazing!), and the bus from Cusco to Puno is only about 5-6 hours. From Puno to La Paz is about another 3-4, depending on the wait at the border. I can recommend a travel agency for a bus directly from Cusco-La Paz if you like.
It is fairly safe, just a matter of keeping your eyes open, minding your luggage and not waving big bills around.

Any more questions, let me know!
