I am going to Ecuador for a few months, and plan on moving around the country, not knowing the exact date of my return to America. I bought a one-way ticket but am questioning the result of this when I get to the airport. How should I go about this at the airport if they ask for a return ticket? Or, will they even ask? I am traveling with Continental and Avianca by the way. I need advice, please! Reply to this

The airlines might not be the problem, but the immigration customs of the country you are entrening. Some countries in South America required North American to have a Visa, like Brazil, for that you will need to show a return ticket.
Anyway, I advice you to call or check online the embassies of the countries you like to visit. Also check the www.lonelyplanet.com, they have a very active forum called Thorn Tree forum where you can post a topic and seeking more help.
Good Luck,

Suzy

Well, my experience is that immigration is not the problem, but the airline. I booked a one way ticket Madrid - Lima. At the airport in Madrid they refused to check me in, because I had no proof of a return ticket! One our later I got back to the desk and another person did not pay too much of attention and check me in. What helped was that I had an e-ticket and did not show anything besides my passport. One way to avoid this hassle is to book a cheap bus ticket that crosses the border. This might require some help from friends, because most likely that can not be booked online...

Ecuador is not making many problems about return tickets, Peru does, and you can not reach it without return.
Let us imagine this situation: you're going to Ecuador, but plan to go back from another country, and don't have a ticket. So, what is the problem? You have (more or less it is acustomed in SA countries) 60 day tourist permit. After that, you have to go out of that country or: a) claim for political asylum b) show that you can live without working c) that you're the daughter of George W.
Do not check with the countries you enter, but with your government. They'll know, since they have responsability over you, not just power.
Ask your own bureaucracy. You pay them.

This information is not correct. Immigration at Peruvian airports do not cause any trouble. This is confirmed by other travelers I consulted and what I experienced myself. When you travel over land no one ever asks for any return ticket. Peruvian government instructed the airlines to not board any non-resident without a proof that the country will be left. Read my previous post to work around this hassle.
