Me and my partner are going travelling to Oz and Asia from Nov 07, both of us are over 31 so cannot get a working Visa for Oz, does anyone know of anyone over 31 who managed to get a working visa, or is it possible to get cash in hand work to help us out if we need some extra cash ???? My boyf is a scaffolder and worked on many building sites, do you think he would get some short term work ?

G'day Shelby.

Yes it is possible to get work in Oz without a working visa however the fines if you are caught are horrendous and you will be imprisoned in one of our "concentration camps" for people who break immigration laws until you can be deported. You will also be charged AUS$200 a day for the time you spend in the camp before you are deported.

It's not really worth it but it's your choice. If you are staying for more than a month, it may be worthwhile finding an employer who will apply on your behalf for a work permit because they can't find anyone else to do the work. Can't remember exactly what that permit is called but I don't think there are a lot of scaffolders so it may well be a possibility.

Sorry to be so negative but it's better to be truthful up front than have you suffer later.

Have you thought about WOOFing? It's a sort of barter system where you work for a couple of hours each day in return for accommodation and food?

Get in touch if you want more information.
