What are the different options for getting to Cuba since the embargo lift?

Hi Everyone,

I am planning a one month trip to central america, I'd like to visit Cuba and possibly Guatemala and Honduras.

I am an Irish citizen and I would like to get to Cuba via a ferry/ plane from Florida.
Does anyone know if this can be done, and a rough price guide?
I'm finding a lot of out of date blogs and forums, pre-2014.

If that is not possible, has anyone any advice for getting to Cuba from Guatemala or Honduras?

Any advice is appreciated!

Welcome to Travelblog! I don't believe Cuba can be reached directly from Florida yet. The US government issued some ferry licenses a few months ago, but nothing is up and running yet. More importantly, some members of US Congress are adamantly against reestablishing ties, and are throwing roadblocks in the process. Reply to this

Thanks Roosta for your reply!
Unfortunately this is what I had assumed, I have tried to get in touch with ferry companies from Guatemala, but heard nothing back.

Some suggestions where to fly into Guatemala, then ferry to Cuba and then either ferry back or fly home via Canada . In not sure if this is the most cost effective.

Thanks again Reply to this

Hi Orla,

Cuba only officially came off the list of State Sponsored Terrorism countries a couple of days ago after a 45 day notice period.

The travel embargo has not yet been lifted though, so unless you are on one of the officially recognised tours you won't be able to go direct from the US.

When I was in Cuba a few weeks ago I did meet a US citizen who just walked up to the Air Mexico counter in Mexico and bought a ticket no problems. This seems to be the easiest transit port from what I've heard.

I should add, I flew through Mexico arriving and Lima leaving. Reply to this
