I'm determined to tramp the Dusky Track in the South Island of New Zealand in early December. I'm travelling solo & this particular trek is notoriously trecherous. Its one of the remotist treks in the country & can be dangerous as part of a group let alone if your by yourself. There are companies that do organised treks but these are very expensive, does anyone have any ideas, or is anyone likely to be in the area at the time planning to trek the Dusky that i could tag along with?
Reply to this I want to do the Dusky Track as well - it looks awesome - and will also be travelling solo. Can't say for sure what dates I'll be there but was looking at November/December.
From what I can see most people start the track by taking a boat across Lake Hauroko with Lake Hauroko Tours. So there will probably be other trampers on the boat ride heading in the same direction. The other option is flying in to Supper Cove and walking to Manapouri, so there would be others on the plane as well. I think you are right - in such wild country it makes sense to have other people about.
You need to check in with the
DOC office in Tuatapere or Te Anau anyway when you set off and they would know if anyone else is heading that way as well.
Reply to this Hey - I'm a solo traveler too and am interested in doing some tough hikes. I'm just starting my research and will post if I find out anything about this hike.
Reply to this Hi.
I actually haven't done the Dusky Track but I do know people who do. (It is on my list of tracks to do in NZ)
The are a guiding company called Kiwi Wilderness Walks. They do have a web site and there prices aren't too bad.
