Prepaid cell phone for 3 week visit
17 years ago, February 10th 2007 No: 1 Msg: #10634
I will be visiting Melbourne and Sydney for a total of 3 weeks and would like to have a cell phone while I am there.

I was wondering if the prepaid cell phones are available and if so, generally how much do they cost. Does anyone have any advice about using them or other ideas of how I could use a cell phone for 3 weeks without having to pay too much?

Here in the US, where I am from, you can get a prepaid cell phone for around $20 to $30 in most grocery stores. You can then buy more air time as you need it. Is anything similar available in Australia?

Thanks.

There sure is - are you just after the sim card? or are you looking for a pre-paid fone package with sim? You can pick up these phones in Post Offices and most mobile phone stores - i think if you want the phone as well (like an old nokia handset for eg it will set u back about $30-50?? then you have to top up the sim with your money - i think you have to call the mobile phone sim provider to register the sim before use as well.. not too sure as i had a contract fone in oz Reply to this

I am here now and am using Yes Optus. It was just a prepaid SIM card for my phone that cost around 30 dollars for 100 minutes. It just slipped in and then I had to call to activate the phone number. They did as for an Australian address, so be ready for that. But so far it's worked great, all incoming calls free and outgoing calls, which I rarely do, cost about 29 cents.

Hope that helps.
