Hello! For those of you are are traveling long-term and have spent months and months in SA...how are you sustaining yourself there? Did you just have a ton of money saved up for the trip? I want to stay as long as possible, and really immerse myself, but as I\'m calculating things, it seems that I might run out of money- this cant be!!! ha. How does one end up spending so much time there without running out of money? are you working? do you have work visas? Also.....it seems that one can only stay in Peru for up to 90 days and then you have to leave...so have you all flown out and then come back? how have you gotten around this rule?
Reply to this Hi. I am getting raedy to leave for Peru in March and I will be styaing for about 4 months. I have saved up money and I am planning on spending about $5,000 while I am there; this is on lodging traveling, food, fun, etc. The thing is SA is expensive to get to and expensive to get around, but once you are there everything else is cheap. I am volunteering and attending Spanish school so I do not know about work visas. I am living with a family (this was arranged through the Spainsh school) I get my own room and three meals a day at $150 a week. Yes, you can only stay in Peru for 90 days at a time, but this is not that big of a deal. All you need to do is leave and come back. For example: before my 90 days is up I will go to Lake Titicaca and cross into Bolivia, when I return to Peru my visa will have been re-upd for another 90 days (at least that is how I undertand the whole thing to work).
Reply to this i agree, the most expensive aspect is getting to SA and back. places like Bolivia are VERY affordable. save up before you leave.
you don't have to fly out of Peru and then re-enter, the buses are much cheaper.
Reply to this One way to susbsidise your trip is by teaching English. Certainly in Ecuador you can pick up work without a work visa, and the money isn't bad, even if you are unqualified. It is also possible to pick up bar work etc.
