I am travelling to Quito later this year and will be spending a majority of my time there. I am a novice traveller and would like to have a cell phone. Should I get an international cell phone before leaving the US, or does anyone know if I can purchase a prepaid cell phone once arriving in Quito...seems like the prepaid route would be easier, if possible. There are some locals that I will need to keep in touch with from time to time and it would be nice to be able to use text messaging and not have to use prepaid phone cards from public phones.
Reply to this Yes, you can find prepaid cell cars, just unblock your cell phone from your provider and when you get there just go to any of the three main cellphone companies (Movistar, Porta, Alegro). Try Movistar or Porta first, ask them for a "chip" (it comes in a card where you can pull out your "chip" and put in your cell phone... and just follow the instructions). They cost from $6-$12 US dollars. You will also be able to get text messaging with that card.
