New traveler to C. America desires travel suggestions, advice. Costa Rica, Honduras, Belize

Hi- im starting to plan a trip to Costa Rica or Belize , Hoduras (Roatan?) and am looking for some advice.
This would be my 1st trip, travelling alone - with hopes of meeting up with travel companions, or not. I'm a single male, looking for a possible place to retire in a not too distant future, and wanting to check out various places of interest - Costa, Honduras, Belize, etc.
Don't know if i should try to travel extensively, or just land someplace (or a couple places) and check out the expat situation. I don't know Spanish right now and, obviously, would have to learn some.
I'm not rich, and, even if I was, I like to live frugally and keep an eye on expenses. I;m really not interested in the touristy things and places, but want to get an idea of what the reality of moving down there would be like.
Should I drive? Travel by bus? Hitch?
I also want to spend relaxing time on a beach somewhere. I play music and am really into that, but would rather participate than just listen. Also like to try my hand at diving, snorkeling, sailing.
Would i be better off renting a small hut, house, apartment, sleep on the beach?
I hope to be traveling in Jan '12 and spending a couple weeks, flying in.
Some people have recommended going on a cruise, but, I don't know. My impression is it would be a big eat-fest, tourist mob type of thing.
Any ideas would be appreciated!

Peace

Brewster

As a musician currently living in Costa Rica I welcome you!

Costa Rica is a great place, been here close to 15 years. Im a big hippie so the no military, 27% protected land, 90% carbon neutral, 98% literacy, etc... kind of appeals to me a bit.

Things can be expensive or cheap depending on how you do it. If you are busing it, staying in hostels, eating at local sodas (restaurants) figure $30 a day. You will not be living high on the hog but the hostels are cheap and clean and the food tasty.

Cheaper areas to look on the coast would be Puerto Viejo, Dominical, Uvita, further South on the Pacific side you have Drakes Bay and Puerto Jimenez.

Many cheap places to stay inland too, those are all coastal towns.
Cheers
