I plan on travelling to Costa Rica in early August with three young children.
Does anyone have experiences or advice, need to know especially whether this is the wrong time of year to be travelling to Costa Rica with youngsters! Also, any suggestions on locations that are best suited for a young family. We like to investigate the local environment, not sit beside a pool all day!

Reply to this I just got back from Costa Rica last month and I recommend that you stay in Alajuela. It's just 5 minutes from the airport, super easy to get around, and it's really more of a local Costa Rican town. There is this great place, Zoo Ave, that's kinda a zoo but not really. There are a lot of animals that have been rescued from illegal pet smuggling or sellers. There are a huge amount of birds, even peacocks that walk around, and monkeys.
In the more touristy areas, American dollars are accepted and there is a good bit of bilingual abilities. You can pay for any tour in dollars or colones. If your kids start to really miss Western food, McDonalds, Taco Bell, and KFC are very well represented.
Getting tours is really easy. Your hotel can arrange them for you no problem. The tours will pick you up at your hotel or at a very easy pick-up spot. I went to Tortugero, which is where the sea turtles come to lay eggs. It's a great little village and it's very relaxing. The beach is nice and I'm sure your kids will like it!
