We are going on a surgical aid trip to Guatemala, this March. Project HANDS is a Vancouver-based aid organization that performs surgeries on the impoverished Mayans in the mountains of the country. After our 8 days helping out, we will have another two weeks to travel. Should we stay in Guatemala or head to Nicaragua? Any suggestions would really help out. If you have been following my blog, you will understand that, at 60, we aren't up to roughing it. We need to stay rested, healthy, and safe, but we're not sissies. Preferably, we like to land in one place and stay there for at least a week. That helps us get a feeling for a place. Thanks.
Reply to this I would consider Costa Rica. I live in CR and it has a lot more to offer then Nicaragua. I do love Guatamala with its Mayan temples, but after 2 weeks I would recommend Costa Rica for relaxing. Hit a volcano area for Thermal Hot Springs, stay in a Tree-house Hotel, relax on a rainforest lined white sand beach with Capuchin monkeys running around you and Sloths in the trees. Nicaragua is still a bit unstable in my opinion and they are causing a little trouble these past few weeks on the border.
