Travelling solo for the first time, unsure about how to play it.

I am 18 and will be travelling in NZ in may/june 2010 on my own. I am thinking of using the kiwi ex to get around but have read some bad reviews, so am now a bit unsure. I read that it is a rip off in terms of the hostels chosen or recommended by the guides, and that its basically just a shagfest. I'm not believing everything I read but wondered if anyone could shed some light on these rumours? Any experiences, good or bad, would be great. Thanks!

Hi Rhian,

Welcome to TravelBlog.

Do you mean May/June 2011? I've used Bottom Bus which is affiliated with Kiwi Ex, and found them really good.

The drivers usually booked a night's accomodation in case I didn't already have a reservation - but said it was no problem if I didn't want to stay there.

Check and see if you can use the bus service, but arrange your own accomodation etc. Reply to this

Not recent no, sorry.

The link below is for a thread on OZ Experience. It contains opinions of both extremes, and in the middle - so read it and make your own mind up :-)

Have you decided which areas you'll be going to?

Some of the other bus networks like Naked Bus and Intercity have $1 fares if you book far enough in advance.
