Sydney to Alice Springs - cheapest option

Cheap way of getting to Alice Springs

Hi guys and gals,
Me and my wife will be in Australia in January (as part of our world trip which starts in november.....very excited) and part of our plans was to go see Ayers (Uluru) Rock. Now I understand that the best option would probably be to fly there and I've found tickets for about £130 each way per person, so £260 return. Because we plan on doing a tour from Alice springs to Uluru, the total cost will be around £400 per person for the entire trip (not including accomodation while we are there). This seems a little steep to me......not knowing much about the price of this trip....does this seem like the right sort of price?

If it is, is there any way of getting it cheaper, do flight prices go down in certain times of the year, do last minute tickets cost less and is there a good cheap tour that you can recommend to Uluru from Alice Springs....because the one I've seen is $250 per person for a 3 day trek including all food and camping equiptment.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, picking from past experience or just knowledge of australia.

Thanks in advance 😊

Yas

Hello Yas and Zaf

Alice Spring will be expensive, and airfares are only going to be cheaper if you can find a good special with the airlines - so keep visiting the websites of Qantas (ex Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Darwin) and Virgin Blue (ex Sydney) and you could get lucky. Note that you can also fly directly to Uluru, so that could be a cheaper option for you. If possible try to book during the specials, as last minute tickets aren't well priced in Australia to the best of my knowledge.

Also be aware that accommodation around Uluru can be expensive. It has been a long time since I was there, but it isn't the cheapest place to visit.

If you want a totally different way to travel, you could take the train called The Ghan - it leaves from Adelaide, but unless you take the normal seats (not a sleeper) and get the Ready Rail fare then it is cheaper by plane.
