How do you deal with a chatterbox (stranger) seatmate?

What's the politest way of saying buzz off? 😊 (or at least giving them a hint to please shut up)

What I've I tried so far:
pretended that I was listening to in-flight music (even if it's actually turned off)
busied myself with taking pictures of mundane things...just as long as I was clicking my cam
forced myself to sleep (also tried pretend sleep) Reply to this

Usually, a headset and a book work for me, but when it doesn't, I see if a conversation is worthwhile.

One time, this guy didn't seem to care about my headphones or book and continued talking to me, so I took out my headphones and gave him my wholehearted attention (annoyed like crazy, of course). A few years later, he's actually a good friend, go figure!

Other times, I suffer through a few minutes of conversation until take-off, and then point to my book and say, "Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but I'm going to read my book." So, what about the rare person who doesn't get the hint and starts asking about "Oh, what book are you reading?" Well, I'll show them the cover, and if they continue going, I'll just interrupt and say, "I'm going to read now" and I put my headphones back in.

If I feel bad toward the person, I might initiate conversation again when it's close to landing, so their feelings aren't hurt and karma's all good. Reply to this
