Hello everybody, I'm Tamara, living in Canada for now ,hoping to get my visa to move to Australia next year.
I'm looking for itinerary ideas for my trip.

Originally I was planning to just travel there for a year and see if I wanted to stay but since I'm over 30, I couldn't apply for a WHV (which is really not fair!)and so I decided to get a leave of abscence at my job and get a permanent visa that would allow me to work in Oz and also stay there if I want to but still have the possibility to come back here if I don't like it there or can't find a job.

Anyways, right now, I'm reading as much as possible on the web about Australia and trying to make a plan for my year. I am thinking about travelling around for the first 2-3 months and then renting a place in the Sydney area near the place where I find a job in my field (hospital labs). BTW, any lab techs out there??
I'm hoping that I'll get my visa in time to go in july so that i can spend the 2-3 months of winter travelling down from Cairns to Melbourne and seeing all the highlights of the East coast.
I don't know if I want to take Greyhound or use the Oz experience. I've read different opposing comments about those 2 ways of travelling and it's hard to decide. I don't want to rent a car and drive because I have no sense of direction and anyways I just sold my car now to stop having to pay for insurance, registration, gas, parking and all the costs of owning a car and I even gave up my drivers licence ( can always get it back withing 3 years). So I don't have it now and don't want it either.

The thing is that I would also like to see the other parts of Australia, and also New Zealand and Fiji and Cook Islands. LOL I want to go everywhere! And if I get a job, which I must do, then I'll be stuck in Sydney for the rest of the year. So I'd like to try to incorporate as many of those places as possible into my first 2-3 months.

So if anyone has any itinerary suggestions for me, I'd appreciate your ideas. Thank you!

Read Antipodean Antics which you could order from your bookshop ISBN number is 9780956526007. Deals with a round trip of Oz & NZ by someone in a motorhome, but also describes all the big cities as places to live in. It also has a cd with many pictures and you can contact the author with questions. I thought it very informative. Kurt. Reply to this

Hi Tamara. If I were you, I would get your driving licence back before you come to Australia even if you don't intend to drive. Getting a new one in Australia is a real pain.

In my experience, it is next to impossible to manage in Australia without transport of some sort unless you intend to stay close to the centre of one of the main cities or just travel between them.

Also, check out kangaroojack. They have just spent a year travelling around and you may get some good ideas from them.

Thank you John for your advice. About the driver's licence, I will for sure get back to Canada after my year to Oz, before moving back to Oz for good. So I will get my drivers's licence back then. I guess if i have a Canadian licence when I move back, it shouldn't be a problem to get an Australian one? I don't want to drive around on the opposite side of the road just yet anyways.lol And if I do move there for good, I will definitely take a couple of classes...
I will check out kangarrojack and get some ideas for my year there. Thanks! Reply to this

i just came back from australia recently and a suggestion from me is to get a job first thing, andstay at a few hostels while finding one. around sydney would be the best, try barefoot cafe in manly i no they were looking forsomeone when i left. once you get some money, the best idea you can do is to work your way up the coast. flights from sydney to fiji and venuatu are about $275 and what you can do as a suggestion is fly uphamilton isaldn, take a ferry to remote islands around there, then take a ferry back to hamilton island, fly to airlie beach, stay there for a couply of days in a hostel its a backpackery town but very beautiful. then you can take a bus to ission beach, which is very gorgeous and also a=has hostels to accomadate you, then you can take a bus to a city with an airport, and fly to cairns or brisbane. if you decide cairns you can then take a bus from cairns to port douglas, and when i went my favourite part of the trip was port douglas and sydney. in carins every night they have these wonderful night markets, and if your low on money can sell you food for a low amount if you like. if you have quwestions, my family members live in australia and i can give them your number for any questions you may have. i am fourteen so i don't have all the answers but that was just a suggestion. the flights to and from cairns and airlie beach are aout 200-300 dollars, cheaper in the winter. and try to take ferrys they are much better and will take you many places. dont forget there are many places with tourist information you can alwauys ask them, they gave me alot of help.
