Hi I am heading to australia as well to work for a year. And my friend recommended using a company called Travellers contact point and they opened a bank account for me, and will also help you with other things like finding work, and finding a flat to rent.
I found it was worth the money I paid, because it is one less thing I have to worry about doing myself.
