Who has hiked in the colca canyon? I will be going to Peru in 3 weeks and, among other things, plan to go to the colca canyon and do some hiking there (1-3 days). Has anyone tips of how where to start? Should I take the public transport and go hinking by myself or is it better to do so with an organised group?

Reply to this Hi Amber,
My boyfriend and I hiked (2 Days) Colca canyon a few weeks ago... We organised it through the hostel where we stayed at and it was about $45p.p US for the 2 days-one night. The public bus to the Canyon is really really bumpy and we made the mistake of doing it as a night bus that left at 2am to then get to the canyon around 7am for a full day´s trekking. It was impossible to sleep on the bus - so don´t do that¡¡¡
Anyway, my advice is a 3 day trek would be much better than 2... We spoke to some other guys who did th same route as us over 3 days .... Given we did it over 2, our first day was about 9 hours and the terrain was quite tough .
Anyway, a tour group is probaby good ´cos the trails aren´t really marked that well (unless you had maps or something ?). We stayed at a place calld Oasis in the canyon which was quite cute, but very simple.
Goodluck and enjoy.. it´s very beatuiful¡¡

Reply to this I had great time hiking in colca canyon - 3 days, 2 night trips are best and I got a really good deal - about $40. With Kanas Peru Travel, run by a gy called Cesar who was our guide. the advantage with this timing is that you leave at a civilised hour from arequipa, aruond 9am in a private bus wheras most tours offer public bus accommodation. this gives you opportunities to stop to see the volcanoes, the vicuña reserve and have transport to chivay hotsprings when you arrive that evening, a much better proposition than walking and you definitely must go... there is sauna and beautiful pools outside and even thogh it was raining and cold when I was there it was a fantastic experience sitting there in the hot!
Cesar tel no is 051 054 9326443 although when he is touring he never answers so quite hard to get hold of him. also you can go to his contact agency which is on the west side of the main plaza, about half way up - I think it is called peru tours and it is literally a desk with a CAMERA-BATTERY shop behind and stairs going up on the right of the shop. reasonable accommodation and had nice guide to take me into canyon for the walk. you do need to leave the canyon in the dark to get public bus back but it is beautiful walking under the stars, and cooler.
hope that hlps
