Hi guys,

My girlfriend and I are off around the world in October 2010. When we arrive in OZ we are thinking of HIRING OR BUYING A CAMPER VAN?

Which is the best option? Or has anyone any experiences?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers, Elliot

In that case it will be much cheaper to buy a van. You can get a decent one for $4000. Divide that by the number of days you're there for and it's around $26 a day. Renting would cost you double that amount, plus if you buy you can sell the van on at the end of your trip. Reply to this

Try looking on Gumtree. Also the boards in hostels wherever you land. Reply to this

You may also like to check out standbycars.com.au. I have not tried them yet, but plan to. Have heard good reports about them.

The trick of travelling with stand by cars/motor homes/camper vans, is that you pick a vehicle.... let's say you are in Sydney, and you choose a vehicle which needs to be relocated to Melbourne. It tells you the day on which you need to leave Sydney and how long you have to get to Melbourne. Mostly three days. It can be driven in about 10 hours, so you have a little time to maybe spend a day in Canberra, or do some sightseeing along the way.

When you are ready to leave Melbourne, check again, and choose a vehicle which is going "somewhere"! It could be Brisbane, or Perth, or Darwin, or wherever. And repeat the whole saga.

Now if you are travelling on a planned and booked itenary, this will not work. But if like me, you travel on the wing, and decide today, where you are going tomorrow, it works very well. You need to be flexible!! It also leaves you free to decide to do a tour now and then, in between self-drive legs of your trip.

I travelled across the USA like that in 2001 (13 weeks) and 2004 (19 weeks) and relocated some two dozen vehicles.... never knowing where my next destination would be, until I checked to see what vehicles were available. It is a great way to travel, but you need a spirit of adventure.... or maybe just being broke!

At the places of my destinations, I often rented a vehicle for short trips and did small tours and took local transport. Really got to know the locals.
