I wonder if there are any circumstances where the identity of the commenter would affect your decision about whether or not to accept the comment?

The most recent comment left for me was the most negative one yet about any of my blogs, and I wrongly thought that someone had anonymously put this critique without leaving their name - which I thought was poor form. However, this was not the case. Wouldn't think that someone's identity would decide if I published a comment - it would depend more on whether the comment was totally unreasonable or irrelevant. That's what I thought - we tend to accept positive comments and ignore negative ones, regardless of who wrote them. Are you going to add your latest comment to the 'nasty comments' thread?

I went looking for that thread, but couldn't find it - otherwise I might have posted something there. Reply to this

Hi Guys,

When I blog on Kanchanaburi in Thailand, I received negative comments on the tiger temple we went to see. Some, even negative, were proper points, so I decided to accept them. One was really more in the insulting mode that I did not accept it.

I did also had an entry on Ethiopia. Only stay for the night in the country, and most of the info I got were not accurate. Two people point it to me. I was happy to publish them, as they were completely right...me badly informed...and ready to correct the mistakes.

Beside it, I receive more spam as comments...those go to the bin straight on obviously.

I terms of PM, I got a funny one from a guy few months ago. Critizing my lifestyle (I'm sure he got a point). The funny point, the guy was working for a luxury brand, and he did use his company email. When I did reply, with a cc to the customer service of the company...we'll guess...the same person told me it was an hoax and he never sent that email. No news since than, but fun case.

If some people have enough time to waste to send nasty comments...good for them. Reply to this

I don't think enough people read my blogs for many of them to be trolls. I can't think of a particularly nasty comment that I've received.

I've accepted almost every comment - with the exception of three - in one case it was the spam and in the other two it was from people seeking me to find them sexual services. All other comments that have sought to correct errors in my information I have posted and I made the necessary corrections.

The one exception to correction was the comment who disagreed with my use of the word pilgrim at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus (he said that there are only visitors and not pilgrims) - but as I explained to that person, I use the word to describe any person who travels for prayer or devotion to an important religious place. which was not intended to confuse the term with a Haj Pilgrim to Mecca. I still published the comment together with my reasoning.

I posted the most recent comment because it was an opposing point of view, but one aspect of it (criticising my writing style) was totally irrelevant to the rest of the comment, but I published it anyway - and added a lengthy response.

We'll I've been here four years now and as of 1 January 2010, my number of hits was 53,447. I remember getting excited when I had my first month of over 500 hits, it wasn't till about 20 months after I joined, but now I get approximatey 1,000 per month, and that increases when travelling.

I won't reject a comment just because I disagree with it but I have rejected a few which I considered to be spam. Sometimes the comments are as interesting as the blogs.

I rejected a bunch of comments from somebody who loves me and wants to marry me. And I have rejected a bunch from those who tell me they want to have sex with me. I also rejected an anonymous one from a screaming lunatic who hates everything I say both in my blogs and on the forums.

I won't reject a comment just because I disagree

I have had a few comments that I put on blogs rejected. Probably because the blogger disagreed with my point of view? But, I wont retaliate by deleting their points of view, if they engage in a forum discussion with me about the topic. 😉
