Being gay is certainly not what defines me, just curious if there were any other guys out there who want to do or have done a similar trip. Any tips welcome and if ur keen come along!
A little about me. Easy going and love exploring, prefer off the beaten track aswell as the beaten track, want to see all the world has to offer eventually.
Reply to this Hello Aus1 😊
When I was in Uruguay, I met a gay Australian guy. He said there is a lively gay scene in Mexico for example, and didnt seem to find the homophobia that Central and South America is famous for too bad.

Reply to this I'm a homo. I backpack. Been on mini-treks for 2 weeks in Central America and 3 weeks in SE Asia. It really depends on how flamboyant you are. In Central America it didn't come up much. There wasn't really a gay scene, but I really don't travel to have anonymous sex in 3rd world countries. I'm not easily pegged as gay, so I just didn't tell people in situations where it seemed akward. I did a 4-day motorcycle trip with homestays in Vietnam and they kept talking about girls and marriage and I just gave short answers. I felt like it would be more awkward to vehemently declare my sexuality than to just be discreet. Most homos I know would rather go on a gay cruise than backpack for months through a continent. There's a few of us though.
Reply to this There are pleanty of us out there, but as copywriterleon mentioned, most of the backpackers are not looking for the gay scene so it can be harder to distinguish. I have backpacked across most of West, North, Central, and Southern Africa with no problem as well as most of Eastern and Central Europe. My partner and I did Argentina about two years ago and are headed down to Brazil in two weeks.
Argentina seemed very safe, and as sexuality didnt really come up too often in conversations with locals, I certainly never felt any danger or problems. Good luck with your trip, sounds like you will be getting to see a lot of beautiful places.
Reply to this Hey AUS1, I'm actually a 23yo gay guy who's planning a somewhat simular trip as yours.... Except a little longer, lol! I live in Cali & I'm planning on leaving June of 2011 where my 1 1/2 - 2years of traveling will begin... I'll be going down to Mexico by road since I live just about 2 hours away. From there I will backpack throught every country in Central America & then throught all 13countries in South America... Then hopefully go on to Europe... I have family & friends in Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Italy, Belgium, & Spain therefore I'll have a couple less things to worry about than most people. Even though many other risks still linger about..... Neways, to answer your question I believe there are gay backpackers out there, just not many of us.... Since most prefer expensive cruises & hotels (which I find nothing wrong with) I'll just save that for my retirement days... for now I wanna live life to the fullest & explore the world my own way... Which by the way will include visiting "some" gay clubs every once in a while... But mostly wanna be off the beaten track...
