Hi All, Having done the east coast, I'm about to embark on a trip from cairns to alice springs then want to go on the Darwin, Broome, and down to perth and beyond..
Does anyone have any advice as to where to go in the north and the east??

Also i hear it will be the wet season in the north in Feb so may not be able to get to see what i want to.. has anyone been to these place in the north during wet season is there any point?

Any advice on how best to travel between these place would also be greatly appreciated i've been looking at flights, coaches and trains so far!

I was in the North-Western part of Australia many years ago and drove between Cairns-Alice Springs-Darwin-Perth. It is my favourite area of Australia, but not the most user-friendly due to its enormous distances.

I travelled in the dry season, so not sure what is accessible during the wet. Around Cairns you have the Atherton Tablelands, Port Douglas, Mossman Gorge and the Daintree and these are all worth seeing. This would include the Barron River falls, which in summer can be spectacular.

I really loved Kakadu which is a few hours drive from Darwin, but I know that some sections close over summer. In northern Western Australia, I really enjoyed the Geikie Gorge near Fitzroy Crossing, and Tunnel Creek in the Kimberley Ranges. The Gibb River Road is the best road to see the sights of the Kimberley region, but I think it unlikely any public transport heads along there - also, in summer it is quite likely to be closed due to rains. The Bungle Bungles is also supposed to be superb, but I never visited it.

As you head south to Perth, I would recommend the Hammersley Ranges, Monkey Mia (for the wild dolphins), Kalbarri National Park and the Namburg National Park.

As for the best way to get around, buses do run along all of this area and the roads are very good - but the distances are massive - so unless you are a real fan of bus travel, think of taking a plane for some sections. Trains do not operate in the Northern Territory apart from between Alice Springs and Darwin, so it is not possible to cross into Queensland or Western Australia.
