We will be doing the salkantay trek in August. We need to know bus/train prices from Cusco to Mollepata & Aguas Callientes to Cusco. Also if guides are required on the trail (NOTE! Not the Inca trail). Thnx for the help. Reply to this

Hi

I did the Salkantay trek in 2008 and you don't need to have a guide to do the trail. I saw quite a few people doing it by themselves.

We had a guide which cost us $150 each, which I thought was pretty good value as that included; bus and train fares, entrance to Macchu Picchu and a guide there, all food (which was excellent) and a chef, horses and a horseman to carry the heavier stuff, tents, etc

I'm not sure of exact prices off the top of my head for the bus/train prices but I know that the bus was really cheap. We took a local bus that took a couple of hours to get there and the train back from Aguas Calientes was also quite cheap, maybe $10USD or less.

Enjoy Salkantay it's beautiful! Reply to this

Adventurer Steph,

Did you book your trek in Cusco after you got there?

Thanks Reply to this

Hi everyone - I also am looking to do the Salkantay trek, probably sometime in May/June. Vagatude - when will you be there?

I'm trying to learn if I should be booking in advance (and paying upwards of 350USD) or if I should wait until I get to Cusco. I don't want to miss out but I need to be cost conscious as well.

Thanks! Reply to this

Hi all,

Same here: don't want to overpay, but sure don't want to miss out! From what I've read recently, it seems like it should be no problem booking in Cusco, even as the high-season approaches. Prices seem to hang between $150 and $200 for the 5-day version of the Salkantay trek. Interesting article, BTW, about what to expect, and what to look out for, at the Uncornered Market blog. The authors very recently did the trek, which they bought locally in Cusco.

We'll be there in mid-March, tail end of the rainy season, and I've seen a couple of comments from people who warn of the trail maybe being 'dowright dangerous' during this time. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks. Reply to this

Hi

I booked when in Cusco, I think about a week in advance. There are so many different agencies, there are always treks available. I think if you booked it over the internet it would cost alot more. Also another thing about booking while you are in Cusco is that you know who else is going to be doing the trek. When we did it there were four of us and we didn't have anyone else on our trek, which was great!

We did the trek at the end of October so I wouldn't know about weather at other times. It did rain quite a bit on the lower parts of the trek, butthis wasn't really a problem. Reply to this

Now the question is how to get from cusco to molletpata (the start of the Salkantay trail). How much are cabs? Maybe scooter rentals? Any ideas? Reply to this

I would imagine / hope that the tour agency you book with in Cuzco would arrange transportation? Anyone know for sure? Reply to this

The tour that I went on included being picked up by taxi and taken to a local bus that goes to Molletpata. If you go with a decent company this should be included. If you plan to do it by yourself then you can take the local bus. Sorry I can't remember where you take it from, but you can probably find it when you get there. Reply to this

Hello,

You can do the trek by yourself.

Firstly you have to buy your train return ticket from perurail.com there are many prices and schedules.
In Cusco early aprox 4:30 am you can cach the public bus to Mollepata (10 soles aprox.) it's located in the ARCOPATA avenue it's close to the principal square you can go walking or taking a taxi don't pay more than 3 soles to the taxy driver.

From ollantaytambo, there are a lot of bus where you can come to Cusco it's aprox USD 10.

Also if you wan to do by a travel agency you can buy it in Cusco directly normally all agencies gives to the other agency and in you group you'll find people who bought from diferents travel agencies.
Normally the prices are from 250 to USD 180. (don't contributed to the exploitation of the staff who have helped you achieve your goal)

If you don't want surprises we recommend book this trip with a reputable travel agency.

Bye an greetings from germany. Reply to this
