What did you do for the last decade?

At the beginning of the last decade I was still working for a computer company in Dublin, as a Technical Support person.

I met my boyfriend and father of my daughter, who was also employed by same computer company.
We produced a daugther and moved into our own place, as opposed to the houses we shared with 5 or 6 others in Dublin. We needed our own place. I dont think many housemates are understanding about living with a baby. Or else they are understanding, but only until they discover the realities of it.

We(the 3 of us) travelled in Poland, Cuba, Germany and the Netherlands.
Then we moved to Hamburg, Germany, where we lived for 1.5 years. We then moved to where we live now in Munich, Germany. We have been here for 6 years. For the first few years in Germany we got in a depressing amount of debt because my boyfriend lost his job and we couldnt afford any travel, then we got out of debt.

When my daughter was 5, I read 'The Beach' and that prompted me to think about travel with my daughter. I though, how dificult can going to places like Koh Samui and Koh Pha Ngan be with a kid. I went out a bought us both plane tickets. We visited Thailand again less than a year later together and before this Christmas bought tickets to go there again together this year. All 3 or us went to India together last year.

In the last 4 years since I put travel back in my life I have visited various places in Europe, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, India alone, Kyrgyzstan, Brazil and Uruguay.

The last decade? I was trying to learn. finished my High school and college studies in the midst of the decade and successfully landed on a job 2 years ago. well, the same decade I had my first girlfriend and in the same decade I changed from hopeless romantic guy to a skeptic. a lot of things changed. well, grew a moustache. I thought about this a bit and have come to the following conclusions regarding what I did for 10 years:

Not many tangible things. I haven't emerged from the decade with a spouse, kid, company, etc. So in one sense I'm not really sure what I did.

Was I just passing the time by distracting my A.D.D. self with whatever there was to pass the time?

To some degree, yes.

But thankfully I don't think it's that simple. I may not have certain tangible things like that as a result of the decade, but I spent a lot of time contributing to the development of communications & medical equipment, volunteering in various ways with youths, learning more about life/others/myself, finishing a master's degree, saving up some cash, and traveling all over this big ball of ours. I saw a lot, met a lot of people, and had many unforgettable adventures.

Could I have made better choices along the way? Certainly.

Do I have regrets? Some.

But all in all, I'll take my decade and keep my fingers crossed that at the end of this coming decade I'll be able to claim all sorts of other things that I did in the past 10 years.

I realize that was kind of abstract. But if you've ever read some of my blog entries, you'll be thankful that I didn't start getting into specifics as it would have been much longer and rambling than this... Reply to this

I read this post a few days ago and have been thinking about it since...

I was born in '79 so effectively the decades tie in with the main birthdays... in my teens in the 90's, 20's during the noughties etc... you get it.

So the question for me is what did I do with my 20's...

Graduated and atarted a career would be the first thing (Biochemistry, Research and development scientist).

Bought house got married and had a child (almost two, but the liitle monkey still won't come out... any day now).

Diagnosed with Cancer and then kicked its butt!

All my travels to date have been in the last decade, and there has been lots, Numerous European jaunts, several Asian, A year long RTW, and then a few over the last year with my son.

So unlike Marc, I've come out of this decade with many 'tangible' things to take hold of, but I think it's the stuff which can't be measured which is shaping my future...

Cancer has changed my outlook on life completley, my Wife inspires me every day, my son provides me with unexplainable amounts of joy. I'm a very lucky man indeed, I just hope my 30's are a bit more relaxing, with two kids though I doubt that! 😊 Reply to this

It's amazing looking back over a whole ten years. Doesn't sound like long but so much can happen!

I finished high school, completed a double degree with honours at uni then went on to become a high school teacher. I had my first kiss, date, long term boyfriend, etc and then inevitably my first breakup. I learnt to drive. I travelled NZ, England, Italy, Spain and France. I moved out of home and straight across to England. And a fair chunk of that actually happened within the last 4 years!

Can't wait to see what happens next decade. Reply to this
