Hey!I'm going to NZ in late Jan.

The problem is that i'm under 20 ,so driving in NZ is impossible for me...Do u think traveling by bus in NZ is OK ,or not? It's said that the bus system there is not that convenient? And i will go to both North and South Is.

What about accommodation? Is it necessary to book the hostel in advance?(the trip is from Jan to Feb)

Thanks! Reply to this

I travelled all over NZ by bus. There is usually only 1 bus a day so check the day before you want to leave. There are a few places buses don't run but hitchhiking is safe and easy in NZ.I will message you a ph number for a free accomadation guide. They delete ph numbers in here.
Enjoy. It is a wonderful friendly place Reply to this

There's a few boats from Wellington everyday. This boat trip is one of the most awe inspiring things I've done ,along with the Beagle Canal in Ushuaia ,Argentina. Reply to this

Just take it easy, buses arn't great but they get you there. I used to get the night buses to save on accommodation when i was there. Just depends on what you're after. If you don't want ibiza on a bus stay well clear from kewi express. Hitch hiking is an option, especially in the south Island, and if you stay in hostels there's always notices up to share costs...and it being New Zealand, where theres usually only one road, there's bound to be people heading you're way.

Make sure you check out the Welsh Bar in Wellington, cnr of courtney place and cambridge, you'll meet some decent traveller types and make plenty of friends.

Needany specifics, i.e hostel recs or some work contacts, message back. Reply to this

I recently used Stray Travel for a trip around the South Island. Very good value for money and good fun. Not a real party bus by any means but like minded people to share your journey with. You decide how long you spend in the main destinations as you just book on the bus at a later date if you want longer to explore.

My advice would be to not spend too much time in Invercargi as the place wasnt good at all for me. Reply to this

There are cheap buses for tourists between major destinations...naked bus I think..they are green coloured. Ferries across Cook Strait run a few times daily...can be wild buts its a great journey. If u choose to hitch..and I wouldnt make sure u txt vehicle rego to a number thats available for your better safety. YHAs are great and camp sites cheap if u have tent. Reply to this

Anyone got an opinion about Flexi-pass and Magic Bus?(they have both islands passes.)
Did u guys chose Bluebridge Ferry to cross the strait ,or other ferries? Reply to this

I live in Wellington..Id probably go with The Interislander ferries over Bluebridge but that only because I prefer the slightly bigger ships. Bluebridge berths in town very close to Rail station and backpackers..Interislander is at the ferry terminal north of the city but accessible..often see people walking to and from it. Prices and sailing times on the 'net of course. Reply to this

Magic & Stray are both ok, Always book a head couple of days 4 ferry and I think in the morning its cheaper..We found this cool place in Queenstown called Balaton Crepes, if you want cheap home made food with nice sizes, also they really cool help you to get around..We went there every day while visiting(it's next to holiday park, its cool spot to hang out and stuff with hippie couches and seats😊)have lovely trip😊 Reply to this

I went to New Zealand when I was 18. I bought a car and drove with no problems, if you are from the US just obtain an International Drivers license and it works fine, usually they accept your American license. Reply to this
